Professor Don MacRaild<br />

Professor Don MacRaild has been with<br />

the University for over three years and is<br />

acknowledged as a leading scholar of the<br />

Irish and British diasporas. He is recognised<br />

by the large number of invitations to deliver<br />

keynotes and funded lectures at significant<br />

international gatherings, and by holding<br />

a key appointment on significant peer<br />

review panels such as AHRC and the<br />

Australian Research Council.<br />

Professor MacRaild has held a prestigious<br />

fellowship at the Research School for Social<br />

Sciences, ANU. He is a member of the AHRC<br />

peer-review college, a strategic member of<br />

that college and an Inner Board member<br />

of the Irish Research Council and is also an<br />

evaluator for the Australian Research Council.<br />

With funding being a strong point, Professor<br />

MacRaild has accrued over £650K in various<br />

capacities, with most of it from RCUK and<br />

charity sources. Support has come from the<br />

ESRC, AHRC, Leverhulme and Wellcome.<br />

Smaller amounts have been garnered from<br />

the BA and Marc Fitch fund.<br />

Professor MacRaild’s output is prolific and<br />

of extremely high quality, consisting of 11<br />

authored and edited books, four of which<br />

are monographs and over 50 chapters and<br />

journal articles, all with major international<br />

publishing houses and high impact<br />

peer-reviewed journals.<br />

Professor Tony Byrne<br />

Coleraine/Magee –<br />

Professor Tony Byrne obtained his BSc (Hons)<br />

degree in Applied Biochemical Sciences at the<br />

University in 1993 and his DPhil in Chemistry<br />

in 1997. As a Professor in the School of<br />

Engineering, his salient disciplines address the<br />

development of novel nanomaterials for use<br />

in photocatalysis and electronic applications.<br />

Professor Byrne has been with the<br />

University for over 20 years and is recognised<br />

internationally as a leader in his areas of<br />

research activities and has major influence<br />

and impact on the fields concerned. He is<br />

a foremost member of the Research Institute<br />

and is currently performing at a 4 star level.<br />

Professor Byrne has published over 200<br />

articles, to date, of these 47 high quality peer<br />

reviewed publications have been published.<br />

He has an H index of 17 (1,300 citations).<br />

His first paper has 260 citations and a recent<br />

(2012) review article was the number one<br />

hot article for Elsevier’s Applied Catalysis B<br />

in 2013 (Impact Factor 5.823).
