Looking forward, the Island’s population is projected to increase by an average of 1.1% annually over the period to 2021 – approximately double the rate of population growth forecast for South Australia as a whole. 2 Growth of this magnitude will see the Island’s population reach around 5,400 in 2021. 1.1.3 ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS Chart 1.1, below, shows the industry profile of Kangaroo Island – relative to that of the national economy – based on employment by industry. The standout industries for KI – both in absolute terms and relative to the Australian economy – are Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing, which employs some 23% of the Island’s workforce (relative to 3% nationally) and Accommodation and Food Services, which employs some 13% of the Island’s workforce (compared with 6% nationally). Defining the proportion of the Island’s labour force which is employed in the tourism services sector is difficult to undertake with precision as the ‘tourism industry’ is defined not by the good or service produced, but by the person by whom it is consumed. Combined with average length of stay data from TRA, this implies that around 586,000 visitor nights were spent on the Island. Table 1.2 provides details of these visitors by visitor type, indicating that around 90% stayed at least one night on the Island. More than a quarter of visitors to the Island in 2007-08 were international tourists – a relatively high proportion in light of the fact that at the state level, international visitors represented only 2% of total visitors. Visitors from elsewhere in South Australia (i.e. intrastate travellers) made up the largest share of both visitor numbers and visitor nights on the Island. In 2007-08, TOMM data indicates that some 42% of visitors travelled with a partner and 49% with friends or family – shares which have been relatively consistent over proceeding years. 6
