Highlights of Fiscal 2012<br />

Our Response to the Great East Japan Earthquake<br />

Japan, particularly the Tohoku region, suffered devastating damage by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.<br />

Some of the Group’s plants were also damaged. The Group quickly launched restoration efforts at the damaged plants<br />

immediately following the disaster and managed to complete all restoration work by June.<br />

Meanwhile, for the prompt restoration and rehabilitation of the damaged areas and the people living in these areas,<br />

the Group has made emergency shipments of goods such as optical cables and low-voltage electric wires aimed at restoring<br />

societal infrastructure, as well as provided relief supplies and made financial donations. The Group continues to conduct<br />

these activities today.<br />

Participation in restoration work at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station immediately following the disaster<br />

The Group was asked to assist with the emergency restoration of the communication lines<br />

linking the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station with government agencies and Tokyo<br />

<strong>Electric</strong> Power’s Head Office. Restoration of optical ground wires connected to the tops of<br />

transmission line towers was successfully completed on March 18 at a work site located<br />

10 km from the power station.<br />

Support activities for the reconstruction of affected areas<br />

<strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> and other Group companies regularly hold Tohoku food fairs to support<br />

the region.<br />

Community-Oriented CSR Activities<br />

The <strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> Group conducts a wide variety of CSR activities in the Group’s business locations all over the world in<br />

its aim to harmoniously coexist with local communities.<br />

Biodiversity conservation activities<br />

<strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong>’s Itami Works participates in restoration activities of the nearby Koya Pond.<br />

For the purpose of restoring trees in this once very green area, Itami Works has conducted<br />

activities that include the collection of seeds, the cultivation of seedlings, the transfer of these<br />

seedlings to the “islands of wild bird” (created in the shape of the Japanese Archipelago),<br />

the removal of weeds, and dealing with great cormorants, which were a pest. Itami Works<br />

joined the activities in April 2008, and a total of 282 employees have contributed to this<br />

project on 49 different occasions over the past four years.<br />

Anti-drug campaign in Thailand<br />

<strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> Wiring Systems (Thailand) <strong>Ltd</strong>. (SEWT) has participated in<br />

the TO BE NUMBER ONE anti-drug campaign in Thailand for approximately<br />

10 years. As part of the campaign, SEWT promotes various measures,<br />

including raising anti-drug awareness at the company, keeping young people<br />

away from drugs, and establishing an anti-drug network outside the company.<br />

SEWT has been actively promoting drug eradication not only inside but also<br />

outside the company. Highly valued for such commitment, in 2011 SEWT<br />

became the first private company in Thailand to receive the Golden Award from Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya.<br />

<strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> Group Citizenship Activity Smile Relay blog launched<br />

<strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> opened <strong>Sumitomo</strong> <strong>Electric</strong> Group Citizenship Activity Smile Relay, a blog to<br />

introduce community-based corporate citizen activities performed by Group companies and their<br />

employees, on its website in May 2011. This blog reports the various CSR efforts conducted by<br />

Group companies and employees in Japan and other countries through their words and opinions<br />

while introducing the characteristic features of each country and region.<br />
