NCAR’s 2010 Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Science (SIParCS) program got
under way in this quarter, and it includes several TeraGrid-related projects. This year 20 students
are participating in the program from 17 different universities from across the country. Some
have signed up for the Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering (VSCSE)
petascale applications development, to be held online July 6-9, 2010.
Hello,
I am currently in the process of setting up a training page for our users and came across your
website. This website has ranked the best and comprises of the most comprehensive collection of
training materials and tracking training progress. Would it ok if we redirect our users for training
to your website.
Sincerely
Rangam
NICS efforts in EOT were highlighted by two large workshops, the NICS/OLCF XT Hex-Core
Workshop May 10-12, and the Computational Thinking for Educators workshop June 12-14. In
addition to these large workshops, six college classes from Colorado to Massachusetts to South
Carolina were given access and direct support during the Spring 2010 semester. Considerable
work was also completed on a CI-Tutor course in Parallel I/O, and a new course for the catalog
was started.
PSC
PSC led the planning for the Student Program for the TeraGrid’10 Conference. This included
securing funding from NSF for students to participate in the Conference as well as organizing
sessions to engage the students.
Purdue
Greg Howes, University of Iowa professor of physics and astronomy, contacted TeraGrid looking
for a system on which his students participating in the Iowa High Performance Computing
Summer School course could practice parallel computing. Purdue RP stepped up as TeraGrid
resource partner to accommodate Professor Howe’s needs by providing access to Moffett,
Purdue’s SiCortex supercomputer. Graduate students from 14 departments in fields as diverse as
biochemistry and physics, economics and astronomy, geography and electrical and computer
engineering participated in the two-day, hands-on session of running and debugging parallel code.
The over 4,500 processors and extraordinarily fast custom interconnect fabric of the SiCortex
system proved to be a perfect fit for what Professor Howes was trying to accomplish. The Iowa
graduate students ran 1,420 jobs and used 16,721 CPU hours.
TACC
TACC’s education and outreach programs include the scientific computing courses (2 during this
reporting period) and tours of TACC’s facility at the J.J. Pickle Research Campus (about 10 miles
