This quarter, there were 172 news “events” where TeraGrid was mentioned in a unique way on
the World Wide Web, as was determined by Google Alerts for the term “TeraGrid.” This number
is steadily increasing each quarter. There were 330 events in all of 2009. There is more ‘buzz’
about TeraGrid among bloggers and professional organizations that are now choosing to feature
our news—especially internationally. TeraGrid is achieving broader exposure as we have made
an increased effort to release news items via our outreach list to related professional
organizations. TeraGrid’s FaceBook page has become more utilized and the number of ‘friends’
has increased from 64 in Q209 to 109 in Q210. See:
Plan Year Six (PY6) officially began in April, 2010. Within the Integrated Project Plan for the
plan year, Leake had identified the need for additional help with science writing, and graphic
design. To support this need, .20 FTE of additional effort had been funded for graphic design
services by Shandra Williams (PSC) and .30 FTE allocated for science writing by Jan Zverina
(SDSC). Each began to provide additional assistance this quarter—Williams helped with web
needs, documentation, data facilitation, and design assistance with TG’10 efforts. Zverina began
to customize stories so that they were less RP-specific, and more relevant to TeraGrid in general.
Zverina also took a leading role with the TG’10 communication committee efforts.
Science Highlights
Sixteen stories were identified for the 2010 Science Highlights book. The book will be printed
and delivered in time for the November Supercomputing conference. Once again, Warren
Froelich (SDSC) will serve as editor, and Carlton Bruett has been contracted to provide design
services. Most of the ER team provides stories and assist with editorial efforts for this
publication, as well as the 2010 Education, Outreach, and Training book, edited by EOT Working
Group Member Ange Mason (SDSC).
Discussion ensued about how to produce the 2011 Science Highlights publication. The incumbent
TG-ER team will continue to identify story prospects for 2011 purposes, but the winning XD
team will assume ownership of the production once the award is announced in April 2011. The
printing and design will be funded with XD funds, and the production schedule will be
determined by the winning XD team. We would anticipate that it will be delivered in time for
SC’11. The piece will showcase XD science and technology.
TeraGrid’10 Conference
Elizabeth Leake (ER Team Leader, UC-GIG) and Jan Zverina (SDSC) served as co-chairs for the
TeraGrid’10 Communication Committee. Faith Singer-Villalobos (TACC), Bill Bell (NCSA),
Daphne Seifert (IU), Trish Barker (NCSA), Shandra Williams (PSC), and Michael Schneider
(PSC) also contributed. Warren Froelich served as deputy chair for the conference, and most of
the ER team had a role with the communication efforts of the conference.
TeraGrid Resource Allocation Committee ER Team Involvement (TRAC)
Efforts to identify stories via the TeraGrid Resource Allocation Committee (TRAC) meetings
continued. In April, Elizabeth Leake and Dan Katz began to share the responsibility on behalf of
TeraGrid External Relations so that it wasn’t necessary for both to attend all meetings. A printed
letter from Leake and Katz is now included in reviewer packets for each TRAC meeting. The
letter reminds reviewers to identify those proposals that are especially transformational in their
field, or that use technology in new or unique ways. They are also asked to watch for projects that
