enabled by the TeraGrid Share service. TeraGrid Share provides users with 2GB of secure,
personal space for collaborating with other TeraGrid users and the world. The new mobile file
management feature allows users to manage files across the TeraGrid while away from their
desktop. Users can browse through data, download files, create folders, rename and delete files
and folders, copy files between systems, and publish files to their TeraGrid Share accounts.
6.2.1 Operational Activities
TeraGrid continued to exceed new thresholds for many user-related metrics. Notably, in May,
TeraGrid surpassed 1,400 individuals charging jobs in a single month. TeraGrid also surpassed
6,000 active users at the quarter’s end. Finally, 662 new individuals joined the ranks of TeraGrid
users, the second highest quarterly total to date. This elevated workload is made possible by prior
efforts to streamline the new-user process and reduce the central staff effort.
TeraGrid users numbered 6,482 at the end of the quarter, including 5,414 individuals with current
TeraGrid accounts and 1,068 reported gateway users. Of the 5,414 individuals, 2,037 (38%) were
associated with jobs recorded in the TeraGrid central accounting system. Figure 6-1 shows the
growth of the TeraGrid community since 2004. (Active Users = Users Charging Jobs + Gateway
Users; TeraGrid Users = Current Accounts + Gateway Users.)
The TGUP’s access capabilities continue to be among the most highly used features, with users
accessing the file manager portlet 18,061 times this quarter, and 1,221 users visiting the GSI-SSH
portlet 23,685 times. The new ticket system portlet made the list of most-visited portlets, with 350
visits, even though it only entered production in June. The automated password reset function was
used 292 times. Table 6-1 shows the most highly visited TGUP applications for this quarter.
