Croy further told an investigator he used his pocket knife to cut the victim’s throat. Croy was transported to the Shasta County Jail and booked for assault with a deadly weapon, torture, assault to commit rape, attempted rape, and grand theft auto. The California Highway Patrol assisted the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office in the apprehension of Croy. Musicians needed The Shasta College Community Concert Band invites all interested musicians to join this 100+ member ensemble for the new Fall 2007 semester. This year will mark the community band’s 29th anniversary. The ensemble is open to all community members who read music and play a standard wind band instrument (woodwind, brass, or percussion) and does not require auditions. The band creates in a low pressure, supportive, and creative atmosphere a wide variety of music including movie soundtracks, themes from musicals, marches, and other traditional band music. On Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. in Room 633 (Band Room) at Shasta College there will be a brief special introductory meeting for all new members. County death review team warns water, children can be deadly mix With childhood drowning as a leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 14, the Shasta County Child Death Review Team (CDRT) would like to remind parents and caregivers that while swimming and boating provide hours of enjoyment and exercise for children…water and children can be a deadly mix. A drowning can occur in a variety of circumstances — during water recreational activities (such as swimming and boating) or when a young child is left unsupervised in the bathtub or near a pool or hot tub. Drowning, which can happen in as little as one inch of water, is usually quick and silent. A child will lose con- Simpson University business students scored in the 75th percentile on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) field exam which is used across the nation by public and private higher education institutions. Graduating seniors in the business department, which includes degrees in business administration, management information systems and accounting, were given the assessment test in spring. The test assesses a student's knowledge of management, managerial accounting, and marketing skills and is designed to measure instruction and curriculum quality. The results were compared with the almost 150,000 graduating seniors from hundreds of institutions who took the test nation-wide. Simpson University was one of 65 institutions in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) that partici- sciousness two minutes after submersion, with irreversible brain damage occurring within four to six minutes. In 2004, 87 California children ages 14 and under died as a result of drowning and 317 children in this age group were hospitalized for neardrowning. In Shasta County there was one drowning and three near-drowning incidences from 2002 to 2004. Some safety tips from the Drowning Prevention Foundation: • Closely watch young children playing in or near any body of water. • Never leave a child unattended near water while you answer the telephone or doorbell, attend to another child or Simpson students above 75th percentile on ETS tests pated in the ETS exam. To put things in perspective, a competitive CCCU business school on the west coast looks for an average score for all students to be greater than the 50 percent of the national average. Move lawn chairs, tables and other potential climbing aids away from the fence. Any gate or door leading to the pool area should be self-closing and self-latching, opening outward, with the latch placed on the poolside and out of reach. • Install panic alarms on all house doors and windows leading to the pool area, automatic sliding door closers and an automatic safety cover over the pool. • Drain off water that accumulates on top of pool cover. • Keep rescue aids, such as poles and life preservers, on both sides of the pool. • All non-swimmers should wear approved personal flotation devices (life vests) when they are near water and especially near rivers and streams. • Swimming lessons do not ensure safety. A child who falls into water unexpectedly may panic and forget his or her swimming skills. Adults who serve as caretakers for children who swim should know how to swim themselves and also be certified to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an emergency. Immediate CPR could prevent death or massive brain damage.
