OBITUARIES Cecil Ray Fitzwater Mayers Memorial, 96 Cecil Ray Fitzwater passed away on July 21, 2007 at Mayers Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Mr. Fitzwater was born April 30, 1911 in California. Services for Mr. Fitzwater will be Monday, August 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall in Millville, CA. Burial will be at Millville Cemetery. The fire killed up to 90 percent of the trees and destroyed 254 homes. The fire’s smoke plume could be seen for hundreds of miles and degraded air quality for scores of California communities. The burn area looks like a moonscape of grey ash bristling with blackened dead tree trunks. “The environmental devastation and loss of homes is tragic,” said Bonnicksen. “It is especially disheartening because this catastrophic fire was predictable and preventable. Managing forests can not only make forests safer, but harvesting trees as part of a scientific management approach can have a double impact on curbing greenhouse gas emissions – first by reducing the severity of wildfire and secondly by storing carbon in wood products instead of watching it fill the sky in tremendous smoke plumes.” In 2006, U.S. wildfires burned nearly 10 million acres and cost $1.9 billion to suppress. The fires were 166 percent greater in magnitude than the previous 10-year average. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Review tribal constitution Editor: This is to all band members of the Pit River Tribe. I would like to strongly encourage you to review/read our Pit River Tribal Constitution. It is the document that was designed and formulated and adopted to PROTECT AND SAFEGUARD OUR RIGHTS, ALL OF US! In a fair and impartial manner. If you have misplaced your copy, ask for another one! Nothing in the constitution can be changed or modified without the full knowledge and consent of the membership! I want to remind everyone here; Pit River Tribal Government and sitting on the Pit River Tribal Council is very serious business and that very important and serious business must be understood and carried out by the elected people that sit on the council FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF US! If you are unable to attend meetings, you have the right to request the minutes of the meetings. Your Band Representative was elected by you to represent your best interests and to protect and safeguard your rights in an ethical and honorable manner at all times and in all issues that are reviewed, discussed and voted upon at the council table! If you have questions or concerns regarding decisions made by the council you have the right and obligation to your family and yourself to speak to your representative. Call 335-5421 or call the Pit River Indian Health Clinic 1-800-843-7447 and ask the staff to transfer your call to the tribal office! I have done so! If you feel your band representative is not communicating with you and is allowing regulations, rules, laws or policies to be modified, bent, or ignored for their own benefit or the sole benefit of relatives or in-laws or friends, then you must seriously consider electing a different band representative. When band reps choose to modify, bend or ignore constitutional mandates and federal laws for their own benefit, then they are putting ALL OUR RIGHTS IN JEOP- ARDY! Regarding the removal of the present tribal chairperson; ask the council for a letter dated April 20, 2007 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Director, Virgil Akins. This letter explains WHY the council should have READ the Pit River Tribal Constitution! They should have read Section 5, Recall before they hired an attorney that cost US $20,000.00 to remove the tribal chairperson. Bottom line! They removed the tribal chairperson illegally and had to reinstate the tribal chairperson. Again, I encourage you to become involved, and knowledgeable about what the council is doing for you! FROM WHERE I STAND, member of the Madesi Band, Pit River Tribe -Marina Evans Member Madesi Band Pit River Tribal Member Reached conclusion Editor: To All Madesi Band Pit River Tribal Members. After weeks of discussion with many qualified Madesi Band Members, many who can not serve at this time as they live and work some distance outside of our ancestral territiory, I have reached the conclusion that we must support and elect Alvin McDaniels as our Madesi Band Representative in the upcoming Pit River Tribal Election! Alvin is a direct decendent of Alec and Jenny Patterson whose home was in Roaring Creek. Alec Patterson held the status of Chief in that territiory at that time in 1900 and before. Alvin is a minister by occupation and he has a keen legal mind. Consequently he is always busy helping others. Alvin recognizes how critical it is right now to be the council member for the Madesi Band and he is willing to devote time and energy to work with other tribal council members to restore fairness and impartially in all decisions made at the council table for all tribal members. Alvin is also very knowledgeable about our tribal constitution. Brandy McDaniels has consented to be the Alternate Madesi Band Councilperson. Brandy McDaniels is Alvin’s niece. Brandy is a well educated young woman and has served on the Pit River Tribal Housing Board as a board member in the recent past. She is familiar with the interworkings of the Pit River Tribal Council. Brandy is also busy as she is working on a second college degree, however she too understands how important it is to actively work with other band members on the tribal council to make thoughtful, fair and impartial decisions that will secure the protection and rights of all members of the Pit River Tribe. Alvin’s mother and my mother were first cousins; their mothers, Sadie Patterson and Dolly Patterson were full sisters and they were the daughters of Alec and Jenny Patterson of Roaring Creek. -Marina Evans Member Madesi Band Pit River Tribal Member What surrounds the leadership Editor: To our friends everywhere: Greetings from Yolo County, and from those of us here at the SPECTRE Group of the Affiliated Obsidian Nation. It’s been far too long, since we spoke with you last. In this communique, we wish to respond to a letter-tothe editor published. The letter was written by a delusional white man named Maximum Bob: also known in some circles as “Robert Boyce Sr.” Until very recently, this individual used to work as a Tribal Administrator for the Pit River Tribe (Burney, CA). Due to space considerations, we are precluded from reproducing his meandering manifesto here, wordfor-word. Instead, we will address specific parts of his statement, as it involves his role in the corruption controvesy that surrounds the leadership of the Pit RIver Tribal Council. He starts his statement off with a lie. He writes that he is speaking in it as an individual, but nothing could be further from the truth. Everything he has said to the media up to this point has been as a representative of his job at the Pit River Tribe. Now that he has been given his walking papers by the Pit River Tribal Membership and dozens of tribal members are clamoring for him to be charged with assault and battery is no time for him to suddenly start claiming that he is “writing this letter as an individual and not on behalf of the Pit River Tribal Council.” He also writes: “the Tribal government has an inherent obligation to administer its duties in such a manner as to benefit the overall whole society of its membership.” We agree with this statement wholeheartedly; our only question being how does this sentence relate to Maximum Bob and the Tribal Government Gravy Train that he has glommed onto at the Pit RIver Tribe The recent historical record illustrates in vivid detail how most of the benefits he’s talking about (paychecks, housing, jobs, no-bid contracts, etc.) have gone not to “the overall whole society of its membership” but to those people fortunate enough to be connected to the tribal council’s inner-circle. In his statement, and in speaking about (his interpretation of) tribal government, he writes: “It’s not about who can tell the best lie. This THE INTERMOUNTAIN NEWS • AUGUST 8, 2007 • PAGE 5 statement on his part is ludicrous to the point of being delusional, seeing as how he has been feeding the public, and the print media, and the tribal membership nothing BUT lies ever since the news broke about his assault upon Marena Martinez. Ms. Martinez as the reader may recall, is the representative of the Hamawi Band of Pit River people. This is the same “tribal administrator” who sneered to the Silent No More protesters who were manning a picket line outside tribal headquarters on the day of the assault-and-battery incident: “that’s right, I’m going to take all of your money. I’m going to stuff it into my pockets ‘till they’re overflowinng with money, and there’s not a damned thing that you can do about it BECAUSE YOU’RE SO STUPID!” This is the kind of treatment that he doles out to the dumb, stupid, backward Indians who oppose him when he thinks no one’s looking. But it’s a whole different story when it comes time for him to grease the wheels of the print media. Then, his behavior switches dramatically and schizophreniclly. All of a sudden, we start getting statements like this from him in the letter-to-theeditor section of the local newspaper: “Government is about... social, economic, educational and spiritual advancement.” To which we are compelled to say: “jerk yourself off on your own time, Bob - not ours.” He goes to exaustive lengths to highlight the deplorable state of tribal affairs at Pit River prior to his coming on board as administrator. Yet he does his readers a grave disservice in failing to mention how he himself has no prior experience AS a bonafide tribal admiinistrator. Nor does he tell us when all of the sloppy, greedy, arrogant, and inept Indians of the previous administration left the picture and were replaced by the current, heroic tribal council we have, at present. Good Indians or bad Indians; then as now: Maximum Bob’s super-exclusive little circle on the Pit River Tribal Councl hasn’t done a thing to help make the situation better. Because of its stultifying lack of true leadership ability, the 2007 Pit River Tribal Council has only succeeded in making everything on every level, worse. Boyce would like the public to believe that great strides are being made at the council level to move the tribe forward. But in reality, no such strides exist. The council lives in a bubble world of its own creation. In this environment, it remains secure from the criticism of its own members. Because it must cling so desperately to what little power it does have, the council remains super-resistant to change. It subscribes to an us-vsthem mentality, as such, it’s “leadership” lost touch with the Pit River People a long time ago. With regard to his statement: And some of the accusations are so absurd as to defy imagination: I, the Tribal Administrator, assaulted a Council Member on the sidewalk.... We are not troubled by Boyce’s continued bleatings of denial regarding the assault and battery that he committed upon one of our people. He knows what he did; and we know what he did; and soon, the entire World is going to know what happened that day and why. The Iron Hand of True History will write how justice was done here. There is no place in This World or The Next for insects like Boyce to hide. In trumpeting his innocense so clumsily, Boyce screwed things up for his supporters at the tribal council. How did he do this By admitting the videotape in question is still locked away out of the public’s reach at tribal headquarters. So far, the only people that have ever been allowed to see the tape are the cops and the tribal council. No one, including the general public, the print/broadcast media, or the Silent No More Peoples protest movement is being allowed to view the tape for themselves. If they could see the tape for themselves, they could decide for themselves if the assault and battery charges are justified. But, goes Boyce’s point-ofview, since the tribal council has already made that decision for everyone concerned, Lady Justice can just go screw herself. Why is the council being so secretive about this evidence If Boyce and his cronies at the tribal council truly had nothing to hide, the videotape would have been made avallable to the public months ago. But it hasn’t been made available to anyone except the people who made it. Hmmmm....did we hear someone say “doctored evidence” If the Affiliated Obsidian Nation ever gets our hands on the Wizard of Elmore Videotape, we’re going to put it on YouTube. This is exactly what the tribal council is afraid of, that’s why they keep sitting on it like a 600 pound gorilla: THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO LET THE TRUTH CONTAINED IN IT BE SHOWN TO MIL- LIONS OF PEOPLE CLEAR ACROSS AMERICA. This is our statement. The words are ours, and they are the truth. And having said all that we would, we will be leaving you - for now.
