Where does your dog get to play Lucky dogs get to run in a backyard. But for big dogs, a backyard may not be enough space. Dogs that live in big cities may not even have a backyard. Dog lovers have found a way to let their pets play. They are building special dog parks across the country. What is a dog park A dog park is a public place set aside for dogs to run and play while off their leashes. It is also a place where humans can enjoy a parklike setting with other people and dogs. Most communities today have leash laws, and dogs are not allowed to run free in the neighborhood. Dog parks offer a safe, open place for dogs to be off-leash. Dog parks are often fenced-in parts of people parks where dogs can explore bugs, wild animals, grasses, trees and water, and where they can play with other dogs. Some of the benefits include: • Dogs can exercise safely. Dogs need room to run. In cities, traffic can be a danger to dogs. Dog parks give them enough space to run without having to dodge cars. • Dogs can play with other dogs. Experts say dogs are not usually aggressive in dog parks. This may surprise people who see their dogs barking and growling at other dogs at home. But in the dog park, dogs usually realize they don’t own that space. Exercise is good for dogs as well as people. If a dog is allowed to run freely, it will stay fit. • Dog owners can socialize. It can be easier to start talking with strangers in a dog park, because everyone there shares some interests. Experts say talking about dogs can break the ice. • Dogs who go to dog parks are often better behaved. Healthy, happy dogs don’t bark as much at home. When the final putt dropped in the cup, Cristie Kerr dropped to her knees, thankful, joyful, overcome with emotion. The 29-year-old golfer had reached the pinnacle of women’s golf, winning the U.S. Open title in Southern Pines, N.C., on July 1. It was her first major championship and 11th tour victory. Kerr turned pro in 1997 after a stellar junior career, but life hasn’t always been about pars and birdies. Her ascent to the top included some trials on and off the course. In 2003 her mother, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer. So Kerr formed a foundation, “Birdies for Breast Cancer,” and has raised several hundred thousand dollars. Kerr has starred on TV, appearing in one of Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice” shows in 2005. In 2006 she married Erik Stevens, a developer. You’ll need: • 4 medium to large dill pickles • 4 slices ham • 4 tablespoons whipped cream cheese • 24 to 32 black olive slices What to do: 1. Dry pickles with a paper towel until all moisture is gone on the outside. 2. Spread 1 tablespoon whipped cream cheese on each slice of ham. 3. Wrap ham slice around the dried pickle. 4. Chill for 4 hours; then cut each pickle into 6 to 8 round slices. 5. Top each pickle round with a black olive slice to look like an eyeball. *You will need an adult’s help with this recipe. Meet Michael Mina Chef Michael Mina is one of the guest stars of the PBS TV series “Chefs A’Field.” In this program, American chefs and their kids go to farms, ranches and fishing boats to learn where good food comes from. Michael, 37, was born in Cairo, Egypt. He moved to Ellensburg, Wash., when he was 2 years old. When he was 15 he got his first job cooking in a restaurant. Here are some things to be aware of: • Remember, a dog park is the dog’s playground. It is not a playground for children. Children probably have their own playground in a different part of the park. Kids need to learn how to act in a dog park. Many dogs are not used to being around people who are loud and energetic. If kids are running around and making lots of noise, dogs could be scared. Dogs may not know they have to play differently with small children than with dogs. They may chase a running child or jump up on a child, just as they would with another dog. This could scare the child, even though the dog is just playing. • If you see a dog coming toward you, stand still with your hands at your sides. Be calm. Most parks have rules to protect dogs and people. Next week, The Mini Page is about our presidents’ education. Many dog parks do not allow children at all. When children are allowed, they should always be with an adult. • Never touch a strange dog without the owner’s permission. • Do not feed someone else’s dog. Even dog treats might be bad for some dogs. Also, the dog could accidentally nip at kids’ fingers when getting the treat. These dogs are having fun chasing each other around an adult’s legs, but a small child could get knocked over or scared by running dogs. Most people who use dog parks police the park. They pick up their dog’s waste and remind others to do so too. They know if they don’t take care of the park, they might lose the privilege. Many dog parks provide plastic bags for dog waste. • Owners are responsible for dogs that are too aggressive. VFW Honors local commander The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States announced today that Ronald W. Harshman of Hat Creek, Calif. has achieved All American status as a Post Commander. Commander in Chief Gary Kurpius said, “Harshman, Commander of Post 5689 in Burney, is one of only 95 VFW Post Commanders world-wide selected for the All American Post Commander. The criteria for this honor are based on outstanding achievement in membership growth and participation in other VFW programs that benefi t veterans and their communities. The title of All American Commander is one of the most prestigious honors given by our organization.” The VFW assists all veterans and their families in obtaining veterans entitlements and other services. In addition, the organization works for the well being of those serving on active duty, in the National Guard and the Reserve. Founded in 1899, its nearly 1.7 million members are located in over 8,500 Posts worldwide. Commander Harshman will be attending the 108th VFW National Convention in Kansas City, MO August 18 thru 23, 2007 to accept this prestigious honor on behalf of Burney Intermountain Memorial Post 5689.
