ST. MORITZ
150 years ago, the hotelier Johannes Badrutt made a daring bet with some of his English
summer guests: that in the middle of winter they would enjoy mild Engadin sunshine.
Badrutt won, and St. Moritz developed into one of the most dazzling winter sports resorts
in the world. Today Corviglia/Piz Nair is a playground for the latest in snow sports, the venue
for world cup races, and a place where gourmet dreams come true. With its 100 km (60 miles)
of perfectly prepared pistes, St. Moritz’s home mountain is simply a legend. St. Moritz also
sets standards with its hotels. Five of the region’s eight five-star establishments, as well as
many outstanding four- and three-star hotels, are located here. They are among the best in
the world. The recipe for success? Pioneer spirit – St. Moritz has cherished innovation for 150
years. One consequence is the remarkable variety of outstanding events held here each winter,
from the White Turf horse races to the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, and from the St. Moritz Polo
World Cup to the Gourmet Festival and the Art on Ice skating gala. A world of seductive
shopping, meanwhile, is on offer along Via Serlas, where the names on the doors read like
a Who’s Who of international style. Yet just around the corner will be an alleyway where
temptations come in the form of local specialities – such as the celebrated Engadin nut tart.
