Classical assumptions<br />
Most of these theories implicitly assume(d):<br />
• there is one basic perceptual unit<br />
e.g. distinctive features, gestures<br />
• linguistic categorization is either inherent in the<br />
signal itself, or the automatic consequence of<br />
low-level perceptual processes.
