9 EXTERNAL SELF ALIGNING BALL <strong>BEARING</strong> UNITS Steel plate cover design for easy installation and removal. Steel plate covered units have a cover fitting groove as illustrated below: Groove Installation: Steel plate cover units have a cover fitting groove as shown above. Fit the cover into the groove and tap it with a synthetic resin or wooden hammer from a 45 0 angle. The cover will be securely fitted by the reaction force. Removal: A groove has been cut onto the outer side of the cover, during manufacture, to make it easy to remove. Fit a flatblade screwdriver into the groove, and pry the cover to remove from housing. 176
9 EXTERNAL SELF ALIGNING BALL <strong>BEARING</strong> UNITS SHAFT DESIGNS Although the shafts used for bearing units require no particularly high standards of accuracy, its is advisable that, as far as possible, they be free from bends or flaws. Set screw bearing units Under normal conditions the inner ring is fitted onto the shaft by means of a clearance fit to ensure convenience of assembly. Eccentric collar bearing system Like set screw systems, it is usual to fit the inner ring onto the shaft by means of a clearance fit, for ease of assembly. Adapter system bearing units In the case of adapter systems, the bearing unit is fastened on the shaft be means of a sleeve. With regard to dimensional tolerances for the shaft, h9 is applicable under all operation conditions. 177
