DATE: 1. What changes have you noticed in your child this week? Discovering voices and sounds In the last few weeks your child has heard with an implant or hearing aids. S/he got used to hearing voices and sounds, and likely you will have observed which sounds your child reacts to very clearly, and which ones s/he doesn’t respond to at all. As they practice hearing, children will start to show a more definite response to sound. At first, they only react to very loud sounds. After they get used to hearing these sounds, they will also respond to softer sounds. Most children react more clearly to voices than to other sounds in their environment. Children also tend to respond more to high-pitched sounds than to low-pitched sounds. In children with hearing impairment, this depends on sufficient amplification of the higher pitches. Gradually, children learn to tell the difference between sounds in their environment, first between the clearly distinct sounds, and later on between similar sounds. Let’s observe what sounds and voices interest your child. If you are not sure about your child’s responses, or if you notice that your child does not develop any interest in sounds at all, we recommend you to speak to a member of your hearing services or implant team. It may be possible that they need to check the device function or programming.
