AMHERST – On June 2 the 13th annual
Katelynn’s Ride (KRide) will take place
at Hampshire College. Avid cyclists, families,
and children alike will converge on the
college located at 893 West St., Amherst,
to help raise funds to fight childhood cancer.
Katelynn’s Ride is named in honor of
Katelynn Battista of West Springfield, who
lost her battle with cancer in 1997 at the age
of 11. To date, Katelynn’s Ride has raised a
total of $1.5 million to fight cancer.
Money raised through Katelynn’s Ride
goes towards Baystate Medical Center’s
Sadowsky Center for Children and the Jimmy
Fund Clinic; both places where Katelynn
received treatment. Participants can choose to
have the money they fundraise split between
the two hospitals, or sent to only one location,
said Corinne Briggs, event coordinator
for Katelynn’s Ride.
Last year’s event raised $96,000, said
Briggs. This year, Katelynn’s Ride hopes
to have 300 riders participate and raise
$125,000.
“We really want people to remember why
we’re doing this,” said Briggs. “We’re doing
this for Katelynn, and to help the children.”
This all day family event will kick off with
cyclists departing the college in stages beginning
at 7 a.m., with all riders returning back
to the college around noontime. To accommodate
riders of all abilities, there are four
distances to choose from. Riders can choose
to complete a 10-, 25-, 50-, or 100-mile ride.
“We definitely have a lot of avid cyclists
participate, but the ride appeals to all skills
and ages,” said Briggs. “We have participants
seven years to 70 years of age.”
For those who cannot or do not wish to
ride, but would like to help fundraise for
Katelynn’s Ride, there will also be a 5K
walk which will take place on the Hampshire
College campus. The 5K walk is a new addition
to the event this year.
“We’re really excited to add that component
to our event,” said Briggs.
Once all riders have returned to the campus,
there will be a BBQ lunch served and
live music by The Cooper Jones Band of
Western Mass, who play classic rock, southern
rock, and blues music. There will also be
a massage center open for cyclists in need.
The all-day family event will also have a
raffle and door prizes later in the afternoon.
One family that will be participating in
KRide, as they have every year since 2006
is the Rossmeisl family of West Springfield.
Their team, Adam’s Animals, comprised
of family and friends, has raised a total of
$30,000 through their participation in KRide
since 2006.
Katelynn Battista in 1991, at the age
of 5.
Adam’s Animals is named after 10-yearold
Adam Rossmeisl. Adam’s mother, Deb
Rossmeisl, explained that when Adam was
16 months old, he was diagnosed with Acute
Myelogenous Leukemia, a very aggressive
form of leukemia; in fact, the same leukemia
Katelynn had. Adam was also treated
at the same hospitals as Katelynn; receiving
his induction chemotherapy at Baystate
Children’s Hospital in Springfield, and then
receiving a cord blood transplant at Children’s
Hospital Boston under the care of oncologists
from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Today Adam is a happy, healthy, 10-year
-ld boy who has been in remission for eight
years. He currently receives outpatient care at
the Jimmy Fund Clinic to monitor his remission
and any potential side effects from treatment.
“We particularly like KRide not only
because it’s a local event, but also because
Katelynn is from our town and she had what
Adam had,” said Rossmeisl. “And we know
money raised goes towards finding cures.”
Rossmeisl explained that in 2006 only her
husband and cousin participated in KRide.
That first year, Adam wore a shirt to the event
which said, “I turned three this year thanks to
you.” This year, and for the past three years,
Adam has participated in the ride with his
younger brother Ryan, who is now eight years
old. Rossmeisl said that though Adam does
not remember being sick, because he was so
young, he does understand why his family
participates in KRide and what it means.
Participants can find further details and
register online at www.kride.org. There is
still plenty of time to fundraise, as fundraising
commitments do not have to be met until
August 1. Online registration will remain
open until 11:59 p.m. May 24, however, after
that date participants can register with Event
Coordinator Corinne Briggs by calling 413-
303-9233. Cyclists and walkers can also register
the day of the event with registrations
beginning at 6 a.m. Visit www.kride.org to
view for more information on cycling departure
times and registration times.
