Richards, Sousa score in
Mutiny home win opener
EAST LONGMEADOW - After a 2012
season where the New England Mutiny
navigated the proverbial sea with some
of the best teams in the world, the team
returned to familiar waters this year and in
their home opener, a familiar result. The
Mutiny (1-0-0 WPSL New England) started
their 11th WPSL season in winning
fashion as they sailed off to a 3-0 lead
before surrendering a 90th minute goal
to the New Hampshire Phantoms (0-1-0
WPSL New England) in their 3-1 victory
at East Longmeadow High School.
“It was a great start to our season and
we scored some really good goals,” said
first-year Mutiny head coach Roy Gurnon.
“Once we got rolling, the team was fun to
watch especially with our backs getting
forward. Its always hard to pull the team
together for the first game but we got a
great result tonight.”
Midfielder Tori Sousa would start
her strong night on the pitch for New
England in the 17th minute, narrowly
missing a goal off a pass from forward
Rachel Ugolik. Those two would capitalize
six minutes later as midfielder Kacey
Richards lofted a beautiful ball over the
New Hampshire defense that Ugolik found
in her stride.
The soon-to-be Providence College
Friar drove to the end line and cut her pass
across the face of goal where Sousa was
for the tap-in past Phantoms goalkeeper
Jamie Gillis and the 1-0 lead. The score
would remain that way as both teams went
into halftime.
Business picked up in the second half
for both sides, with the Phantoms taking
the early advantage by penning in the
Mutiny in their own half for the first 10
minutes. New England would gradually
grab back their hold on momentum, with
Ugolik testing Gillis in the 53rd minute.
Just a minute later, Richards fed rightback
Jewel Robinson the ball and the
Central Connecticut State Blue Devil
drove inside from the flank. Her left-footed
shot from the top of the box beat Gillis
inside the far post for the 2-0 score.
“Kacey Richards was terrific tonight,”
said Gurnon about his veteran midfielder’s
performance. “She scattered the ball
everywhere and it was her birthday as
well.”
“After kind of a rusty first half, I decided
to do what I do best and take people
on,” said Robinson about her goal.
The Mutiny would hold the run of play
after that goal, with only a top-notch performance
from Gillis (7 saves) holding
back the tide for New Hampshire. In the
83rd minute, Sousa would assist on Jenna
Fisher’s goal. The Boston University
Terrier midfielder dribbled through traffic
at the top of the box and unleashed a
rocket for the 3-0 lead.
In the 90th minute, Lydia Simmons
would get a goal back for the road team,
as she spoiled the shutout attempt for Niki
Deiter (three saves). Next up for New
England is a road match on Wednesday,
May 29 as they travel across state to
Somerville to take on the Boston Breakers
Academy at Dilboy Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
The Mutiny return home to East
Longmeadow H.S. on Saturday, June 1
when they host long-time divisional rival
Boston Aztec (7:05 PM kick-off). Last
year, Aztec defeated the Mutiny Reserves
by a 2-1 score in overtime in the de-facto
East Conference Final that sent them to
the WPSL Championship.
