We do have a lot of seventh and eighthgraders playing lacrosse this year, which will definitely help us in the future.” The Rams two lacrosse teams competed at the junior varsity level this season and they’ll be making the step up to the varsity level next year. Both of the Rams teams wrapped-up their first season last week. “We played a junior varsity schedule this year,” Desautels said. “The girls team did play two games against Monson, who’s a varsity team. That was a very good experience for them because both of our teams will be moving up to the varsity level next year.” While all of the boys’ lacrosse teams in western Massachusetts currently compete in only Division 2 and the girls compete in Division 1, they’ll be three divisions next year. Both of the Rams teams will be competing in Division 3, along with Holyoke Catholic, Chicopee, Chicopee Comp, St. Mary’s and Monson. “We’re really looking forward to competing at the varsity level next year,” Desautels said. “With the commitment of the athletes and the parents, the program looks solid for the future.” The Granby girls jayvee lacrosse team was coached by Jaryn Herrington. Both of the Granby coaches played lacrosse at South Hadley High School. Desautels was also the boys lacrosse coach at South Hadley and Agawam high schools. “Lacrosse is a fast paced sport,” he said. “It’s a mix of several different sports and it’s a fun sport to play. I have a true passion for the sport.” Herrington, who’s an English teacher at the high school, had never coached a lacrosse team at any level before this year. “Lacrosse is a fun sport and I enjoyed playing it in high school. I’m an English teacher at the high school and I’ve really enjoyed coaching the jayvee team this spring,” Herrington said. “The girls on my team have progressed a lot since the first day of practice back in March. It really has been a fun season.” The Lady Rams did post a 7-0 shutout against Taconic in the middle of the season. They also tied East Longmeadow 7-7. “The girls were very excited when they won their first game at Taconic,” Herrington said. “They also played very well in our tie against East Longmeadow. We should be able to compete at the varsity level next year.” Even though both of the Granby lacrosse teams didn’t win very many games this spring, the members of both teams did get a little bit better every day. “We are very young and inexperienced when it comes to the game, but we do have some very good athletes that are picking up the sport extremely fast,” Desautels said. “Both lacrosse teams have matured both physically and mentally over the course of the season. We have been concentrating on skills, techniques and game specifics.” The members of the Granby boys New youth town soccer club BELCHERTOWN - There will be a new youth town soccer club forming in Belchertown for the upcoming fall season, Belchertown Soccer Academy. Belchertown Recreation programs Third and fourth grade summer basketball This program open to residents and non residents alike, is a mid summer evening activity for boys and girls entering third and fourth grade. With the emphases on fun, the objective of this low-key organized recreation summer basketball program is to help teach the game to players, instill attitudes of fair play in all players, promote good sportsmanship and team play; and to help improve the overall skills of the individual player. Games will played on either Tuesday or Thursday evening between July 18 and Aug. 22. Join us for in-town games one night a week this July and August for some low key competition and fun basketball. The cost is $40. Teams will have one indoor game each week and may have one outdoor practice a week. Registration deadline is June 27. Lacrosse clinic A lacrosse clinic, sponsored by the Belchertown Lacrosse Association, is designed to introduce boys and girls grades 5-8, to the exciting game of Lacrosse. The clinic will be held Aug. 5, 6, 7, 8 (Monday – Thursday) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Along with being introduced to the knowledge required to play lacrosse, participants will learn basic skills; including how to throw, catch, scoop and cradle the ball. The cost is $25 per session (mandated that you provide mouth guard). Registration deadline is Tuesday, July 30. Instructional soccer for the fall This program is for boys and girls kindergarten thru second grade. The kindergarten division (must be 5 years of age before Sept. 1) is coed while the first and second grade girls are a division and the first and second grade boys are a division. This is an entry level program to introduce the basics of the sport to girls and boys with the emphasis on fun. The season last approximately seven weeks and will begin early September to the end of October. The cost is only $30. All games are played at Swift River Soccer fields. Birth certificates and payment is due at time of registration. You must register by Saturday, Aug. 17. Recreational soccer for the fall This league is made up of boys divisions and girls divisions for third-fourth grade, fifth-sixth grade, and seventheighth grade. These teams will travel to surrounding towns. These leagues do not require try-outs, everyone who registers before the deadline will be placed on a team. Season will start late August and end approximately the first week of November. The cost is only $45. Registration deadline is Saturday, Aug. 10. SPORTS Pioneers slip below .500 Pathfinder girls settle for split By Dave Forbes Turley Publications Sports Staff Writer PALMER - The Pathfinder baseball team is no closer to qualifying for the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament than they were when the week began. The Pioneers fell to St. Mary’s, 8-2, and Sabis, 12-8, in the only two games Pathfinder (7-8) was able to complete the last week. Their game against Putnam was stopped after the second inning due to rain. Against St. Mary’s on Friday, May 10, the Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom By Nate Rosenthal Turley Publications Sports Correspondent CHICOPEE - Holyoke Catholic softball fell 5-4 to Easthampton. Down 1-0, they took a 4-1 lead in the sixth and leading into the bottom of the second; Megan Logan was pitching a one-hitter. Then Easthampton struck for and on the game in walk off fashion. Lindsey Robins had three RBIs and Andrea Boraski had three hits. The Lady Gaels suffered two big losses to Northampton, 17-5 and Westfield, 17-2. Then they recovered and beat Cathedral 14-12. Lexi Neffinger had six goals for the Lady Gaels. TENNIS The Colts lost 5-0 to Turners Falls rebounded with a 4-1 win over Sci-Tech. It was wins of the fourth to even the score at 2-2, but the Saints scored once in the fifth and five in the sixth to pull out the victory. Trystan Davis had two hits to lead the Pioneers. Austin LeClerc added a hit and an RBI. Branden Cavanaugh and Adam Kozlik each had a hit, while Brad Lord added an RBI. The Pioneers held leads of 1-0 and 7-2 thanks to scoring one run in the first, six in the fourth and one in the sixth, but it was not enough against the Bulldogs, Cavanaugh had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Pioneers. Matt Stafford added two hits. Hess and Kozlik both had a hit and two RBIs. Davis and Lord chipped in with a hit and an RBI. Cole had a hit. Holyoke Catholic’s girls went 2-1 with 3-2 wins over Mohawk and Pioneer Valley Christian sandwiched around a 4-1 loss to Greenfield. TRACK The Holyoke Catholic teams came out on the short end with the boys losing to Hampshire 1-3-41 and the girls falling 101- 35 to Monson. Benz, Jr., M.D., President of Dana- Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Benz graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1973 and received his training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the National Institutes of Health. He is also CEO of Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, director and principal investigator of Dana-Farber/ Harvard Cancer Center, and a member of the Governing Board of Dana-Farber/ Children’s Cancer Center. Dr. Benz is a clinical hematologist and an active NIHfunded investigator. Openings are still available for players, sponsorships, donations, auction items and volunteers. The tournament is held in memory of Jeffery Vinick, an 18-year-old, three-sport varsity athlete who, 32 years ago, lost his life to cancer. Jeffrey lived in Longmeadow, and excelled at soccer, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Longmeadow High in 1981 and attended Springfield College for a few months before he passed away in March of 1982. A year later, the Western Mass. event was renamed in Jeffrey’s honor. Agawam Small Business Assistance to hold annual nine-hole ‘Tee Time’ event AGAWAM - The Agawam Small Business Assistance Center will be holding their annual “Tee Time” nine-hole golf tournament on Tuesday, June 18 at Agawam Golf Club, 128 Southwick St. Please join us and support our efforts to educate and promote growth of our area small businesses in Western Mass.
