Turley Publications photo submitted UMass libraries look at transformation from agriculture college to university AMHERST - The UMass Amherst Libraries will host an exhibit, “Metamorphosis: Transformation from Agriculture College to University,” from May 20 through Sept. 27 on the Lower Level and in Special Collections and University Archives, on Floor 25, in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, UMass Amherst. “Metamorphosis” is the second of three exhibits celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of University of Massachusetts Amherst. This exhibit picks up where the first exhibit “Pioneers” leaves off – focusing on the period just before World War I through post- World War II, during a time of incredible transition for the University as it adapted to the quickly changing twentieth century. By examining and highlighting specific departments, organizations, and activities on campus, this exhibit is a prism for looking at the adaptations and transformations from the early twentieth century through the brief change to Mass State College and then the transition to a full university. “Metamorphosis” explores the expansion of the departments, including Entomology (the first department to grant a graduate degree); the experiences of the college community during the World Wars, the increasing number of women on campus; and the development of student clubs and traditions such as the Roister Doister Drama Club and Winter Carnival. That’s one reason the Amherst LSSE class “Youth on Broadway” was inaugurated in February. “It’s another opportunity for kids who don’t always have a shot at being in a production,” said Linda Chalfant, LSSE director. Professional actress and performer Becca Greene-Van Horn, who leads the class, agreed. “I have lots of kids in my acting, improv and audition classes and see there are only so many parts. They could have cast “Fiddler” four times over,” she said. Student, who had to audition for the class, have been rehearsing every Sunday at the Bangs Center to dance, sing and act in Musical Theater Revue to be held June 1 at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at 6 p.m. in the Amherst Regional Middle School auditorium. The 30 students, who range from fourth to 11 grades, will have starting and featured roles. The students, who come from Amherst, Hadley, Granby, Gill, Northampton, Leverett and Shutesbury, were asked what parts they were interested in. She and Cindy Naughton, the musical director, spent hours going over music to find age appropriate numbers. “We cast roles in a way to accentuate strength, talent and ability and if they ready to go further,” said Greene-Van Horn. “The students have a range of ability. For some it’s their first experience other are real pros. With all of them, we try to take them to the next level wherever that may be,” said Greene-Van Horn. The class also includes understanding the business of theater. “What a director’s idea is, what their type and appearance is as well as dealing with focus, move- See TALENT, Page 27 WHY are we the Best in the Valley As a nanial eratie we wr hard t nd the nanial situatin that best suits YU.
