Belchertown Little League action recap
Editor’s Note: This story was scheduled
to appear in last week’s paper.
Sunday, April 21 Opening Day
McCarthy’s Pub - 11; DF Plumbing - 9
BELCHERTOWN - In a rematch of
last year’s BLL Championship game,
McCarthy’s Pub outlasted DF Plumbing
in a back and forth battle that came down
to the finish. The fans at newly renovated
Hulmes-Warner Mini-Fenway were on the
edge of their seats and a great time was had
by all!
Monday, April 22
Route 9 Diner - 10; Subway - 6
In the season opener for both teams,
Route 9 Diner held of a ferocious Subway
comeback to win 10-6.
Bell & Hudson - 10; Swift River Oil - 7
Things started well for Swift River
Heating & Oil. Down 3-0 in the top of
the first inning, Oilers answered with four
of their own runs. A two-RBI double for
Cameron Barry scoring Zach Rajpold
(HBP) and Chris Ingram (reached on
dropped third strike) started them off. Next
came Vic Camerota in the clean up spot
who hit a towering shot over the center
field wall for a two-run homer off Bell &
Hudson starter Jacob Torna (ND).
Cameron Barry (ND) started for the
Oilers and at times pitched well, but
couldn’t take full control of game. He gave
up six runs in four innings striking out four
and walking one. Swift River was able to
add three more runs off Torna including a
two-run double by Zach Jenks to take a 7-3
lead.
On a cold night, Swift River gave up
three more runs and Bell & Hudson closed
the gap to one run. 7-6
In comes Ryan French to quiet the Swift
River bats, and that’s exactly what he did.
Three innings of no-hit pitching for French
who only gave up a HBP and a walk.
Chris Ingram took over the hill for Swift
River in the fourth. Ingram pitched well,
striking out three and not walking anybody,
but a few defensive mishaps lead to a come
from behind win for Bell & Hudson, 10-7.
Wednesday, April 24
Swift River Oil - 9; McCarthy’s Pub - 2
Vic Camerota pitched a great game. He
struck out 12 McCarthy Pub batters in five
innings of work. He also was 1-for-2 at the
plate with three RBI, a double and a walk.
Hunter Klingensmith threw out a base
runner trying to steal second. He added
three walks and three runs scored.
Veronica Norwood came in to seal the
win for Swift River in the sixth. She took
them down in order with eight pitches and
had one strikeout.
Swift River offense put runs on the board
in all six innings, and featured were the first
little league majors hits for Joey Douillard
and Iain Knight.
Bell & Hudson - 11; Subway - 4
Jacob Torna pitched a complete game
with 10 strikeouts and one earned run. Bell
& Hudson had hit(s) by Garret Hussey,
Luke LeClerc, Jacob Torna, Ryan French,
Jarod Bolton, Mike Halpern, Zavier
Hayward, Andrew Mugford, Garrett
Thompson, and Max Wojcik
Thursday, April 25
Route 9 Diner - 10; DF Plumbing - 7
In a game that wasn’t decided until the
last inning, Route 9 Diner fought off a furious
DF Plumbing comeback to hold on to
win 10-7. Adam Mattingly and Brian Riley
both hit two-run homers that cleared mini-
Fenway’s center field wall for the Niners,
and Tyler Laramee pitched two great innings
to close out the game after coming in with
the bases loaded. RJ Bullock made what was
probably a game saving catch in left field for
the Niner Diner in the final frame.
Bell & Hudson - 7; Swift River Oil - 5
Tuesday, May 7
Route 9 Diner - 13; Subway - 10
In a barn burner at Mini-Fenway, the
Niner Diner held on to beat a tenacious
Subway squad in a game that came down
to the last out. The teams each scored five
runs in the first, and the fun had just begun.
Clinging to a three-run lead in the bottom
of the last inning, Route 9 allowed
the tying runs to reach base for Subway,
and Tyler Laramee made a great diving
catch at shortstop for the Niners to end the
game. Brian Riley earned his first major
league win in his first start, and Owen
Raines came in for the close.
For Subway, Chris “Rusty” Buffone,
Tyler Grissom, Jack Mankowsky, Alex
Morley, and Parker Sandford each had two
hits.
Friday, May 10
Bell & Hudson - 10; Route 9 Diner - 5
Bell & Hudson came out swinging in the
top of the first, with Max Wojcik driving
the first pitch of the game over the Mini-
Fenway center field fence. Three batters
later, Ryan French launched his own home
run shot, just inside the foul pole, and over
the green monster.
B & H took a four-run lead out of the top
of the first, and never relinquished it,
though the Niners kept on fighting until
the final out. The victory leaves the B&H
squad as the only undefeated team in the
league.
Dick’s Sporting Goods - 9;
Country Bank - 3
On a rainy Thursday Night, the hearty
players from Country Bank and Dick’s
Sporting Goods wouldn’t be stopped from
playing baseball.
Country Bank got off to a 3-0 lead, but
Dick’s struck back and went ahead on
aggressive baserunning by Will Hill. Hill
had two hits in the game and scored twice.
Zach Mann was the pitching ace for
Dick’s, striking out four of the seven batters
that he faced. The key play of the
game came in the bottom of the fourth.
Country Bank was threatening to tie the
score, when Matt Tilton, playing first base,
gunned a throw home to Max Dewey who
used a sweeping tag to cut down the runner.
Dick’s went on to win 9-3. Offense stars
for Dick’s: Zach Mann — three hits, Ben
Anderson, Matt Tilton, Aiden Torna and
Will Hill all with two hits each.
Saturday, May 11
Teddy Bear Pools - 6
Easthampton Savings Bank - 5
Easthampton Savings Bank built an early
edge on Saturday, but Teddy Bear Pools
roared back to steal a 6-5 victory at Mini
Fenway.
Luke Ballard (Teddy Bear Pools) pitched
two shutout innings and had a two-RBI single
in the bottom of last inning to complete
Teddy Bear Pools’ rally over Easthampton
Savings Bank (ESB). ESB got off to a
quick 5-1 lead after two innings with hits
by Andrew Fijal, Joey Bianco, Cameron
Bacon, Nathan Dragon, James Kenney, and
Dylan Watrous. Bacon racked up two RBIs
on two hits for Easthampton Savings Bank.
He doubled in the first inning and singled
in the third inning. Tim Roda pitched great
for ESB with three strikeouts and allowing
only one hit and one run in two innings.
Early on, Teddy Bear bats were cold
with only Ballard and Chris Cowls getting
hits in the first two innings. Ballard
then entered the game in the top of third
and shut down the ESB batters, retiring
six of the seven batters he faced – four by
strikeout. Teddy Bear Pools’ rally began in
the third when they filled the bases with no
outs. Jacob Chaisson, Ballard, and Charlie
Vachet each scored in an inning that was
highlighted by Nathan Hoisington’s two-
RBI single. The game ended in an exciting
fashion with Ballard’s single scoring
Chaisson and Anthony Vallone.
Stop & Shop - 9; Chubby’s - 3
Stop & Shop triumphed over Chubby
Checkers 9-3 on a rainy Saturday afternoon
at Mini-Fenway. Undeterred by weather,
Bryson Weagle, Ryan O’Neil and Eli
Sayball-Wimmer combined on a strong
pitching performance, striking out nine batters
through five innings.
In the top of the second inning, Stop &
Shop scored five runs, highlighted by a
double by Ryan O’Neil, and a bases clearing
triple by Ryland Charron. Shay O’Neil,
Ty Sayball-Wimmer, Caleb O’Brien, and
Colby Kokosa also contributed with hits.
In the third inning Chubby’s came roaring
back with hits from Brady Perkins,
Tyler McDonald, and a two-run triple
from Nick Devoto. Jake Falcone and Cody
Samson also played stellar defense for
Chubby’s.
Stop & Shop scored three insurance runs
in the top of the fifth and got Chubby’s to
end the game 1-2-3 in the bottom of the
frame before the heavy rains started to fall.
