EHS at Tullow continued By 1 June, 2007 we are required by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to prepare and publish, on Tullow’s and the DTI’s websites, a statement on our environmental management system. This is part of an initiative to promote the use and implementation of such systems by the offshore oil and gas industry in the UK, and Tullow already fully complies with this recommendation through the use of the IMS. The scope of the public statement concentrates only on those assets regulated by the DTI, which for Tullow are the Hewett offshore installations. EHS management Tullow manages its EHS performance through the Group’s IMS, which provides a disciplined framework for the management of environment, health, safety and security throughout the Group. Each business unit and asset is responsible for implementing systems and processes that comply with the requirements of the IMS. Tullow Oil plc’s certification to ISO 14001 provides external verification of the IMS and this is complemented by an internal EHS audit programme to ensure that compliance with the IMS is effective at an operational level. The IMS offers a high level of business assurance through: • A systematic approach to critical business activities; • Clear assignment of responsibilities and accountability; • High standards for business and EHS performance linked to Group EHS objectives; • Legislative and regulatory compliance throughout all operations; • Sound risk management, planning and decision-making; and • Efficient and cost-effective planning and conduct of operations. The system also allows us to record and share EHS experiences and we use those findings to continually improve performance standards. For new projects and developments, ESIAs are integrated into the decision-making process. Overall, we use the IMS to measure progress, plan improvements and ensure accountability for EHS performance and we have an ongoing focus on ways to reduce any environmental impacts and achieve sustainable improvements in this area. Turtles in Chachar Tullow’s EHS Policy clearly and explicitly empowers any individual to stop any activity at any time where there is an unacceptable risk of an accident or environmental incident. The practical application of this statement does not just apply to major issues, as demonstrated during a drilling operation in Pakistan during the year. The commitment of Tullow’s workforce to the environment and local biodiversity meant that work in the immediate area of a well was suspended until a small local species of turtle that was found near the site could be relocated to a new home nearby.
