Ariana inspired by Ferns star

Rising Te Awamutu netball star Ariana Cable-Dixon
is keen to follow in the footsteps of her idol Laura
Langman.
The 18-year-old wing-attack/centre has set her sights
on making the New Zealand team to contest the World
Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow in August,
2013.
Cable-Dixon says she takes heart from the fact that
Langman captained the triumphant New Zealand U21
side at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Fort
Lauderdale, Florida.
That same year Langman made her international test
debut as a 19-year-old for the Silver Ferns against
England.
‘‘Laura’s inspirational,’’ says Cable-Dixon. ‘‘She’s a
country girl from Te Pahu, showing everyone that you
don’t have to be from the ‘big smoke’ to make your mark
as a netballer at the highest level.
‘‘It gives us girls from the country hope that, with a
lot of hard work, we can make it into the national
teams.’’
Cable-Dixon was one of the star members of the
Waikato under-19 team, crowned 2012 champions at the
recent New Zealand Age Grade Championships in
Auckland.
Wintec Waikato accounted for North 36-28 in the final
to secure the national title.
They won a thrilling semifinal encounter against
Auckland 1 33-32.
Waikato’s three standout players, Cable-Dixon,
Tamsin Moala and Allysha Taurima, were all named in
the U19 tournament team.
Cable-Dixon was rested on the first day of the
tournament after rolling her ankle playing for Allied in
the Hamilton premier club competition. She played in all
six remaining games (two each day), including the
semifinal and final, impressing all and sundry.
New Zealand U21 coach, Janine Southby told Cable-
Dixon that she liked what she saw of her at the nationals.
‘‘I couldn’t believe it when I was approached by the
Southern Steel co-coach, saying she wants to see more of
me in action.’’
Southby invited her to participate in the NZU21 trials
at the weekend in North Shore.
She can’t be selected for the NZU21 team to play
Australia in Melbourne next month because she’s too
young, but her chances of selection to go to Glasgow next
year appear bright.
Magic assistant coach, Rebecca Cabel has also invited
the promising Te Awamutu mid-courter to trial for the
Trust Waikato team she coaches.
