And for the rest of this month all the meals are served with a cup of free hot miso soup. The Alexandra Street business, which opened at the beginning of July, is owned by the Yang family and managed by Thomas Kim. Sue Yang’s mother Jin is also helping out as the new business gets established. Mrs Yang Snr and her husband already own and run two sushi bars, one in Sloane Street, Te Awamutu, and the other in Maniapoto Street, Otorohanga. The Yang family is from Korea, and its chefs are Japanese and Korean. ‘‘This is the first time this style of fresh donburi has been offered in Te Awamutu,’’ says the younger Mrs Yang. All the meals from the new food bar are available for takeaway, and there are also several small tables where meals can be eaten on the premises. TE AWAMUTU COURIER, TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2012 5 Chance to challenge yourself BY CATHY ASPLIN Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade’s first Firefighter Challenge held in April was so successful that another is being staged later this month. Spokesperson Chris Bestwick says planning is well underway. ‘‘We have over 40 firefighters, both volunteer and paid, from around the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland areas who have entered. Ten from our own brigade will be competing — including our Chief Fire Officer Ian Campbell.’’ The challenge on July 28 will kick off at 9am and finish around 4pm. ‘‘The day begins with individual runs, then tandem and team events. The finals will be staged in the afternoon. ‘‘The event is a chance for us to show people what else we do in the Fire Service — as they probably only see us racing up and down the main street attending incidents. ‘‘For Te Awamutu firefighters it is a great chance to pit our skills against others and the clock.’’ The Te Awamutu Firefighter Challenge requires entrants to wear full firefighting gear while they complete a set list of tasks. These include climbing a tower carrying a hose, hoisting a coil three storeys, driving a beam with a shot hammer, using a hose to knock down a disk and dragging a dummy backwards for the last 30m. Te Awamutu firefighter Hamish Doohan tried the challenge for the first time in April and says it a was a great experience. He already had a high level of fitness in readiness for the Sky City Firefighter Challenge (which he competed in a impressive time of 11 minutes) so it was a matter of training on the course. ‘‘We trained for several Sundays before the event which helped me get used to the demands of the event. ‘‘I took part in the individual, tandem, team and relay events during the day. ‘‘It was good fun, but those last few metres dragging the dummy are probably the toughest, I was knackered at that stage.’’ While he won’t be here to compete in the challenge on July 28, he plans to compete in an event later in the year. ‘‘This course is very similar to the Firefighter Combat Challenge, so it’s a great way to test yourself.
