Finals serve up action with celebrations

Waikato are the defending
Wisden Cup national champions.
They are gunning for a three-peat
this year after winning in 2010, for
the first time in 37 years, and
defending the title last year.
The team are captained by TJ
Weistra, who won the men’s
world singles in Canada in 2011.
Kids gain sports
skills in holidays
Children flocked to Te
Awamutu’s KiwiSport Holiday Programme
based at the Events Centre
over the July school holidays.
Sports featured included badminton,
netball, squash, martial arts and
cricket, along with Energize Games.
Each sport was run by a
KiwiSport officer who provided
coaching and an opportunity for the
children to learn about each of the
sports with a practical element
included.
The intention was for children to
gain new skills and experience a new
sport as a potential option for the
future.
A bonus for children attending
was to participate in a netball module
run by KiwiSport Netball officer
Rachel Beale, while also observing a
Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball
squad training session.
‘‘It is hoped that this opportunity
may trigger interest and inspire
young people to take up or continue
to play the sport of netball,’’ says
Waipa District sports co-ordinator
Jude Till.
The programme catered to 5- to
12-year-olds, with approximately 80
children attending daily.
Sport Waikato Team Energize’s
Anton Barr, Garth Thomas and
Tracey Fleming provided lots of
games and activities as an extra
option due to the large numbers of
children attending.
In preparation for the holiday
programme and other voluntary
opportunities, local young leaders
from the Waipa district were offered
the opportunity to attend a
KiwiSport leadership training day
in association with the Waikato
Institute for Leisure and Sport
Studies (WILSS) held at the Kaipaki
Hall and Sports Centre.
The programme is designed to
help young leaders to gain experience,
develop confidence and learn
and build on their practical leadership
skills to be used for future
involvement working with groups of
young people in their communities.
‘‘This is exactly the links we
would like to see being made
between a range of stakeholders and
the provision of opportunities for
our local young people,’’ says Till.

The former Dutch international
(for 10 years) has been employed
as a professional coach by Waikato
Association since 2004 and
was New Zealand coach at the
Commonwealth Games.
Weistra told the Courier it will
be a tough challenge to win for the
third time. ‘‘Everyone will be
wanting to beat us this year.
Auckland will be very strong, as

down to those two teams and us.’’
