That is how the Te Awamutu Events Centre funds were raised. Most people will remember when that was built the trustees did not raise nearly sufficient funds for it and the Council did not sell enough assets to fund it, so the balance of funds were raised by borrowing. Despite my many requests, then as a councillor and person responsible, I was never told how much extra borrowing there was or who authorised it. The trustees were simply thanked for their splendid job and the events centre was built and the debt became part of the pool of debt the WDC has. At the time I suggested a longer time frame so that those who were fundraising could meet their earlier promises. Te Awamutu had a town hall fund that was tipped in to the project. In reality the project was, and still is, a disaster but those that wanted a pool got one at the expense of others and a management company got a free job worth $200K per year, a free business. Now we have a situation where a minority in Cambridge want another pool and they have failed to meet their agreed fundraising target. The WDC have employed professional fund raisers to raise funds, however that produced a substantial loss of about $200K and I understand the WDC have spent about $2 million on plans and dreams. Apparently they then voted to ‘can’ the whole thing due to lack of funds. Amazing that they finally found it in them to be brave. The pool proponents have however tried to come back with this trust malarkey. They, including the Cambridge councillors, seem to not understand what the word no means. It is sad that they have been let down. The rumour is that, if they supported the velodrome, those who wanted that would support them with money for a pool but it did not happen. A sort of gentlemen’s rip off. As the Council have voted against a pool in Cambridge, that should be the end of the matter. The Council CEO Mr Dyet now has no entitlement to put anything further on the agenda regarding a Cambridge pool until such time as the Cambridge people can firstly decide what they want and then show that they can raise the required funds. JAMES PARLANE GST has to be listed in quote by tradesmen In the ‘What’s Hot, What’s Not’ column last Thursday a correspondent complained about tradesmen who quote for a job but do not include GST. He or she should be aware that if a quote is received and makes no mention of GST, then that is all you are legally required to pay. To add it on later is a breach of the Fair Trading LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Act and quite illegal. If this happens, pay only the amount of the quote. If you have already paid it, claim it back from the tradesman and, if they refuse, take it to the Disputes Tribunal for a refund. They will have little patience with the tradesman. If you are asking for a quote, always get it in writing to save arguments later on the amount, and whether it was a firm quote or an estimate. This is from Consumer magazine’s website: ‘If GST is not included in a quote or advertised price, this must be made clear. If it isn’t, you can argue that you should just pay the figure quoted. I have several times over the years gone into this lady’s shop looking to purchase clothing, but on all my visits I have never been acknowledged in any way by her or any of her staff. Not even a ‘‘good afternoon’’. I have even taken clothing down from the rack but never been asked if I wish to try a garment on, nothing. So, I for one will not be returning to this lady’s shop. I do purchase the majority of my clothing in Te Awamutu from the other friendly retailers. World gown glory for Arohena dressmaker BY DEAN TAYLOR When 16-year-old Aucklander Aleisha Robertson recently took out the Miss T.E.E.N. title in Houston, Texas, no one was more excited than Arohena’s Judy Board. Mrs Board is not only director of judges for Pageants of New Zealand, but she had made the evening gown Aleisha wore in the final from material purchased in Te Awamutu — and that gown was also a winner. Aleisha is the current Miss Teen New Zealand, and by winning the Photogenic, Evening Gown and overall Miss T.E.E.N. title picked up prizes including a $5000 Crown Couture, hair products, cosmetics, shoes, jewellery, website promotions, media training and a Barclay College scholarship . . . and lots more. It also means Mrs Board is the first New Zealander to win an Evening Gown title at an international pageant according to Pageants of New Zealand founder Dianne Foley. Mrs Board says she has always been a dressmaker, learning as a child from her mother. She says her parents were conservative, so if she wanted something fashionable she had to make it herself. Her pocket money always went on fabric. In her adult life she sewed for herself and her family. She says it has changed so much now — clothes are cheap and then they get thrown out. Mrs Board has been in Arohena seven years and owns JAK Farms which is run run by her son-in-law and daughter, Alan and TC170712DT01 DRESSMAKER Judy Board made the gown which Miss T.E.E.N. Aleisha Robertson (bottom of page) wore in the final of the international event. She is pictured with the jacket she is now making for Pageants of New Zealand founder Dianne Foley. Karina Belfield. She got involved in pageants not though her interest in fashion, but through sport. Mrs Board has played representative hockey for years and is a member of the New Zealand masters team. Mrs Foley is also a representative player of longstanding, and the pair met and became friends at masters level. Both are guest members of the NSW/Victoria masters team that will play in the PanPacs and then World Masters Games in Turin. Mrs Board became involved in the pageants and is now director of judges. She says it is great for the girls, and a far cry from the beauty pageants of old. She believes they are good for the confidence and future careers of the girls who enter and she loves being involved. When Mrs Foley also found out her friend was a dressmaker she was ‘‘told’’ she would be making the evening gown for Miss Teen New Zealand. Mrs Board had a piece of material she had purchased for a jacket for herself from Stichin’ Stuff that she immediately thought would be perfect. She asked owner Teresa Reymer if she could get more, and she obliged. Mrs Board had definite ideas about the dress, which she designed and made. The fabric is a maroon and pewter stretch with black lace overlay. It changes in the light and hangs beautifully. Mrs Board says too many dresses are made from fabrics that are too figure hugging, and show every strap and bump. ‘‘Aleisha is quite a modest girl, this material hugs her figure without showing too much,’’ says Mrs Board. She designed a fish tail train to make it flow, but that would be easy to walk in and wouldn’t need to be lifted to negotiate stairs. A built-in bra and fitted bone sides hold everything in place. The thoughtfulness obviously paid off as it was reported Aleisha looked stunning. Mrs Board has already had requests from a few girls in the know to design and make ball gowns and graduation dresses, but at present is putting the finishing touches to another special creation. She is making a jacket for her friend Dianne to wear to a Nutrimetics conference overseas. ■ Pageants of New Zealand has a number of events this year including Miss Teen and Miss Hamilton on September 15.
