Mountain folk The Steinway Society of Riverside County has awarded two Idyllwild Arts Academy students. Sophomore Timothy Yu of Shantou, Guangdong, China, and junior Daphne Honma of Santa Barbara, were winners in the fifth-annual competition that culminates with a concert showcasing the talents of up and coming new musicians at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19. The concert venue is at the Indian Wells Theater on the campus of the California State University, San Bernardino, 37-500 Cook St., Palm Desert. This year’s major sponsor is the City of Indian Wells. Judges were Ory Shihor, Colburn School of Music, and Professor Emeritus James Bonn, USC and international Steinway artist. The Steinway Society is a 5-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing classical music to all children. The Society presented classical concerts to more than 9,000 school children last year in Riverside County and the Coachella Valley … Gillien Wright celebrated her birthday Tuesday, March 24. Each donation will provide clean, safe drinking water to a child in a third world country for 40 days. Last year, the restaurant raised about $1,000 for the Tap Project. Town Hall Russell Loutzenhiser Jr., 87, a l o n g - t i m e Idyllwild resid e n t , p a s s e d away peacefully at the side of his wife of 66 years on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Palm Springs. He was born May 17, 1921, in Kendallville, Ind., to a family of three brothers and five sisters. He was a Purple Heart veteran of World War II and the invasion of Normandy. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 800 in Idyllwild. His true passion, however, was softball. He built several softball diamonds in his lifetime, from 1945 in Europe to Indiana and California, including a diamond in Idyllwild. He is best remembered on the Hill for getting hundreds of people involved in his favorite sport, and continued playing into his 70s. Memor ial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Hemet Valley Mortuary, 403 N. San Jacinto St., Hemet. Russ is survived by his wife, Ella Pauline “Polly” Loutzenhiser; two daughters, Cheryl (Howard) Brown and Beth (Steve) Pachman; a son, Michael (Sue) Loutzenhiser; a daughter-in-law, Maria, Mark Loutzenhiser’s widow; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Capt. Mark Loutzenhiser, U.S. Forest Service. He was born Oct. 10, 1962, to Barbara and Mark Campbell in Dansville, Penn. He was the second of three boys. They raised their boys in Warren, Penn. Jimmy had a wonderful childhood full of adventures, snakes and football. He attended Slippery Rock University and received a degree in business administration. After university, he lived outside Washington, D.C., in Huntington Beach and finally in Phoenix, where he married and had four beautiful children. They are Ashlyn Grace, 13; Brenna Lynn, 12; Cole Steven, 10; and Declan Ivor, 7. When Jimmy and his exwife were expecting Declan, they moved to Idyllwild to be closer to Kathryn’s family. Jimmy had o w n e d J a n ’ s Red Kettle, had worked for the U.S. Forest Service, and at the time of his passing, was Town Hall recreation director. A celebration of his life is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 29, at Town Hall. A lunch reception follows. He is survived by his children; his mother, Barbara Campbell; his older brother, Mark (Nancy) Campbell Jr. and their son Tyler; an uncle, Ken; and numerous beloved cousins. He also was a beloved member of the Boss family. He is survived on that branch by Pat and Jan Boss; Gary and Patty McKee; Don and Sally McKee; and their respective children. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Campbell Kids Fund/Jan Boss, P.O. Box 3410, Idyllwild, CA 92549. Christian Science churches in Southern California are filling a 40-foot container with bedding, clothes, musical instruments, children’s books, school supplies, Bibles, etc., to be shipped to Africa. The ad is this paper generated an outpouring of donations. Two trailer loads were taken to the site of the container. It will leave Long Beach on April 8th. Arrangements for a church member in Harare with a semi-truck to pick up the container have been made. He will take his precious cargo to Zimbabwe, Zambia and the Congo. A follow-up letter will be sent upon completion of the deliveries. The members of this church wish to thank our community for its participation in this outreach. To those Africans in need it will be a great blessing. If we may quote from the Bible: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” Malachi 3:10.
