It was a wonderful trip. I was sponsored by Oxford University to attend its International Summer Programme for Teachers of English. In my class some participants were from European countries; some were from South America; some were from Japan. And there were 5 Americans. One of them is from Chicago and the others are from Texas. We’ve made good friends. Each day, we attended lectures on English teaching methodology for one hour and a half. <strong>The</strong>n we join a tutor in a small class of 12, where we learnt classroom research, material development and so on. Though our hands were full, we enjoyed the classes. Thanks to the one-year teaching experience in Westport, I didn’t have any difficulty in the studies. I also traveled to Cambridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, Edinburgh, York and Brighton. I stayed in London for a week and reviewed the places of interest there. London is changing, different from what I saw several years ago, with constructions going on almost everywhere. Krista Osborn Shirley Public Schools, MA mudband2@aol.com Mark Overmeyer Homestead Elementary School, Denver, CO movermeyer2@mail.ccsd.k12.co.us Yale Summer Institute Nia Mason <strong>The</strong> Yale Center for International and Area Studies held five Intensive Summer Institutes for Educators this past July. “Defining Ethnicity in China” was the topic for the East Asian Studies Institute. Each day started at 8:30 a.m. and went to 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. <strong>The</strong> thirty participants, from all over the United States, had a daily lesson in Chinese followed by a speaker who continued into a working lunch. Two presenters kept us busy until the dinner break from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. Each evening we watched one or two informative films on issues concerning China. <strong>The</strong>n there was reading in preparation for the next morning. <strong>The</strong>re was also a field trip into New York City. One particularly interesting film was “Through the Consul’s Eye,” a recently released film of French Consul and amateur photographer Auguste Francois, who used one of the first movie cameras to document everyday life in China at the turn of the [last] century. We saw this fascinating film on the ride into the City. We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and saw and heard about “When the Manchus Ruled China.” After lunch we visited the Museum of Chinese in the Americas on Mulberry Street before meeting with His Excellency Ambassador Wang Yingfan at the Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the U.N. Dinner was a feast at the Oriental Garden in Chinatown. This was a program sponsored by China Institute, which enabled these teachers to tour around China for three weeks. When they go back to the United States, they will finish their projects, which deal with various fields and subjects about China and her culture. I helped arrange visits to two gardens, a cruise on the Grand Canal, and a trip to a silk factory. <strong>The</strong>n, at their request, I added a visit to my school. <strong>The</strong> teachers were so interested in it (they had never visited a Chinese secondary school) that they asked me endless questions. Principal Zhang met with them and answered their questions as well. We planned to let them have a quick visit, taking some photos, but they actually stayed in Suzhou Middle School for one and a half hours, and we had to cancel another visit! Some teachers were seriously thinking of teaching in China, so I told them about our exchange program and encouraged them to apply. Once again, I would like to thank you for having given me the chance to participate in the program. Otherwise, I would not have so many friends. <strong>The</strong> world is a new one to me since then, and the year of 1999 – 2000 is a turning point in my life. Hayes G.
