I’m also busy this week taking the
English Department out to a teahouse
and hosting a banquet for my school’s
principals.
“Before I leave China, Jack [Joanne’s
husband] and I will be spending a few
weeks traveling to Shanghai,
Hangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, and
Jiuzhaigou. It will be nice to do a little
more exploring before I leave, but it
will be even better that a good friend
from Colorado will be joining us for
most of the trip!”
“Two of our students will be awarded
for outstanding achievement and improvement
in the study of Chinese language
and culture, and I am honored
that I am invited to give them the award
certificates on June 5. A Spanish
teacher is joking that I should get one
for my teaching here . . .”
soon, maybe for good. But anyway, they
can go and visit me in China.”
“I am in my new school, Yangzhou
University Affiliated Middle School,
just a mile north of my other school at
133 Huaihai Lu. <strong>The</strong>y are wonderful
here. My apartment is in a sixth floor
walk-up and it was tedious at first, but
now I am up and down the stairs like a
Billy Goat.”
“Home is an interesting word, richer
to me now because of a conversation
last weekend in Shanghai. Someone
asked on Saturday when I would go
home. Quite automatically, I said Monday,
at 3:30. My friend’s jaw dropped
and he said, ‘I thought you were here
until August.’ I said that I meant returning
to Yangzhou; then I realized
that I have been so happy and so comfortable
that I have really felt at home
for many months. Is that strange or do
we all slip into that mode”
“We have had several farewell parties
already and I really have mixed
feelings now: I am glad that it comes
to the end at last, at the same time I am
sad that I am leaving the friends here
