TNG also has space to repair, convert and construct other ships. Hidalgo is next HPH announced in January 2009 its next great project on Mexican land. It is literally on land. It’s the development of a dry port in Hidalgo, a state with one of the largest borders in the country. Over an area of 208 hectares in the region of Tepeji del Río, the dry port will include an intermodal cargo terminal and a logistics park. The project is the result of an agreement between HPH, the UNNE corporation and the state government of Hidalgo. HPH and UNNE have created for themselves Grupo de Logística Mexicano, a company that will operate and develop the new facility, which main services will be to transport by land and railroad containers from various commercial ports to other regions of the country. Today, HPH has the following business units in the country: • Ensenada International Terminal (EIT) and Cruise Ship Terminal, in Baja California • Manzanillo International Terminal (TIMSA), in Colima • Veracruz International Container Partners (ICAVE) and Gulf Naval Yard (TNG), in Veracruz • Lázaro Cárdenas Port Container Terminal (LCT), in Michoacán In the words of Gerry Yim, administrative director of HPH for America, the Middle East and Africa, “the new terminal will play a relevant role in the operation of cargo containers between the main ports of the Pacific and the Gulf. This will allow it to be part of the flow of commercial cargo that is spread from north to south, entering and leaving Mexico under the benefits of TLCAN.” Other benefits include improving the transportation of cargo from Hidalgo to Mexico City, which will reduce current railway congestion. This is not counting new investment and jobs in the region: HPH is investing 120 million usd and it’s calculated the project will generate close to 10,000 jobs in the area. The development will also attract investment from other logistics companies that will use the terminal as their operations base. The project is advancing. Construction will begin this year and the terminal is expected to start operating in the first half of 2010. n
