52 Negocios i The Lifestyle photos courtesy of Photoespaña photography Talented Mexicans Featured at Festival photo alejandra laviada Mexican photographer Alejandra Laviada has won PHotoEspaña’s Descubrimientos PHE Epson 2009 prize, the award by the international photography and visual arts festival that is given to new, young talent. Laviada, born in 1980, won the award for a series in which she photographed sculptures made with objects that had been thrown away in buildings and random places to be demolished or remodeled. Another young talented Mexican photographer who participated in the Descubrimientos project was Óscar Fernando Gómez, a 38-year-old taxi driver whose work was part of the Resiliencia (Resilience) exhibit, comprised of 145 photographs by 10 Latin American young artists who are trying to reflect the realities in which they live through their work. www.phe.es photo óscar Gómez photo alejandra laviada photo alejandra laviada
The Lifestyle briefs ecology Montebello, Global Network of Natural Reserves Lagunas de Montebello National Park in Chiapas is now part of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) global network of biosphere reserves. Mexico is the country in Latin America and the Caribbean with the largest number of protected areas registered by UNESCO (37 total) and it is fourth on the list worldwide, only behind the United States, Russia and Spain. To date, the global network has 553 reserves registered in 106 countries. For UNESCO, the national park’s importance is found in its location: a hydrographic basin of great biodiversity that unites Chiapas’ Central High Plateau with the Gulf of Mexico’s coastal plain. Everything found in this area, from the lakes to the landscape, turn Montebello into a zone essential for the conservation of hydric resources and climate regulation. Also, local communities take part in agricultural activities that help take care of the environment. Some of the 36 natural areas in Mexico already in the global network of biosphere reserves include: Montes Azules, in Chiapas; Islas del Golfo de California (also known as the Sea of Cortes, located between the Baja California peninsula and Sonora and Sinaloa); El Cielo, in Tamaulipas; Sierra de Manantlán, in Jalisco; and Cuatrociénegas, in Coahuila. portal.unesco.org photos courtesy of israel cárdenas
