43 ADDITIONAL HAZARDS POSED BY ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN ACCIDENTS Neumünster, Schleswig-Holstein, DEKRA crash test centre: Team manager Peter Rücker observes the test set-up intently. In a few minutes, his team will once again crash a vehicle into a wall, but this time a twowheeled version: an e-bike, i.e. an electrically powered bicycle. Key focus points include assessing how the battery responds when the bike hits the obstacle, the strength of the frame and the risk of the rider suffering an electric shock. Tests like these are becoming more common in Neumünster, with alternative drive vehicles now accounting for around 70 out of the 150 crash tests performed annually. The results of the crash and safety tests of electric vehicles conducted by Peter Rücker in Neumünster are important for a number of reasons. In the event of an accident, all those involved, and the emergency services, want maximum protection. The crash tests are also of great value to manufacturers, who have to comply with legal standards for their vehicles to be approved. For Peter Rücker, there is an obvious need for special crash tests on electric vehicles: “As well as increasing the weight of a vehicle, the battery alters the centre of gravity. The biggest danger comes from the drive technology itself: If the battery, hybrid electricity or power cable short-circuits during an accident, the occupants and emergency services face extreme danger.
