After hours spent on the motorway with little to relieve
the boredom, the first signs of driver fatigue appear as
the truck veers from the inside lane towards the middle
of the road. The driver fails to react in time and the
truck crashes into the central reservation. Luckily,
no other vehicle is involved in the accident. And it is
also fortunate that this scenario took place in DEKRA
Akademie’s driving simulator, the most advanced of
its kind in Europe.
Motorways, country roads, urban streets, mountain
passes, deer crossing, black ice, pedestrians on the
road, failing brakes and much more besides: At the
click of a mouse, Reinhard Buchsdrücker, project manager
of driving simulation at DEKRA Akademie GmbH
in Hamburg, confronts drivers with every conceivable
situation that professional drivers encounter every day
on the road. Buchsdrücker can instantly evaluate the
driver’s performance, address any shortcomings and
repeat the relevant scenario as often as desired.
“I can even intervene in the simulation with another,
autonomous vehicle,” he says. For example, a car cuts
in from the outside lane in front of the truck to take
the exit road, forcing the truck driver to brake sharply.
The DEKRA trainer’s workstation has the very
latest driver assistance systems including ESP, adaptive
cruise control and lane departure prevention system,
which drivers can learn to use effectively in the simulator.
Another valuable benefit of the simulator is its
ability to educate drivers on how to achieve low fuel
consumption and thus boost the efficiency of the fleet.
Naturally, the training fully complies with the requirements
of German legislation on professional driver
qualifications.
