NEWS IN BRIEF
PACKAGING NEWS
KRONENBOURG 1664 REFRESHES
LOOK WITH EDGY DESIGN
As part of a major marketing investment
into the brand in 2010, Kronenbourg
1664 has been given a fresh, dynamic
new look in the UK. The new packaging
that is now available in all off trade
channels adopts the global design for the
brand, bringing a Gallic, edgy and more
modern look which gives Kronenbourg
1664 superior shelf stand-out and builds
on the premium image of the brand.
BIODEGRADABLE AND COMPOSTABLE
PACKAGING
With concerns for the environment and
sustainability still high on the food
industry's agenda, novel packaging
developments have been of significant
interest recently. Campden BRI has been
active in the general area of novel
packaging developments and, as part of
its current member-funded research, has
published Biodegradable and
compostable packaging materials for
foodstuffs (Review 64).
LINPAC PACKAGING MAKES
OVERWRAPPING EASIER
LINPAC Packaging has designed a new
range of trays to run efficiently and at
high speeds on overwrapping machines.
The overall tray weight had been reduced
but the design incorporates engineered
corners and ribs to maintain the strength
of the tray. The tray flange has been
curved to reduce the chance of damaging
the overwrapping film when running at
high speeds.
KINGSLAND BOXES CLEVER WITH A
MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC
Kingsland Wines and Spirits, is launching
a new bag-in-box 1.5ltr Marlborough
Sauvignon Blanc under the Runestone
brand. Runestone Sauvignon Blanc is
available nationally now through The Cooperative
from June, with an RRP of £10.
The box uses Kingsland’s innovative 1.5ltr
cube format, making it both eye-catching
in design and convenient to carry and
store.
meaningful business discussions and
an outstanding success by both
processing & packaging event from Reed
Exhibitions will be Pro2Pac (13-16 March
2011), the only event in the UK dedicated
exclusively to Food & Drink. Taking place
in London and co-located with the World
renowned IFE the two exhibitions will
provide the focal point for the food &
drink community in 2011.
BPI CELEBRATES CENTENARY
CERTIFICATE
British Polythene Industries (BPI) PLC,
leading European manufacturer of
polythene films, bags and sacks, is
celebrating a relatively rare achievement
for British PLCs. The Greenock based
company, which operates from sites
across the UK, Europe, North America
and China, has received its Centenary
Certificate from Companies House.
FOURTH LEADERSHIP HANDOVER IN
117 YEARS
A modest but significant event in the
history of weighing and packing was
enacted recently in Kyoto, when Takahide
Ishida took over the presidency of Ishida
Co., Ltd from his father, Ryuichi Ishida. It
is significant partly because the €600Mturnover
company is a pace-setter in the
technologies that pack much of the
world’s food for retail and industrial sale.
NATIONAL FLEXIBLE
ACHIEVES ‘FULFILMENT’
When in a hurry for suitable packaging
for a range of branded snacks,
flapjacks, bars, etc. Fulfil Food
Solutions turned to film packaging
specialists National Flexible for help
with the project and were delighted
when they were offered more than
they bargained for.
With 18 separate products in the
range and the prospect of more to
come, Fulfil needed printed packaging
films that would carry the
generic theme for the brand identity
across a variety of HFFS and VFFS
packaging formats, but the prospect
of commissioning an external design
agency for the artwork proved to be
time-consuming, costly and unappealing
to the Hampshire-based food
manufacturer.
“I was delighted when I found out
that National Flexible could offer me a
full artwork service for flexographic
printing through their incumbent
agency - NXL Design,” said Bryan
Fowler, Fulfil Food’s Operations
Manager.
“Because they were managing the
design and print process for me, NXL
Design made the whole process really
quick and easy without having to
involve a third party agency,” continued
Bryan.
The film was quickly printed, slit
and made ready for the packing lines
in only a matter of days - in plenty of
time for Fulfil to satisfy the snaking
needs of its hungry customers.
requirements please contact
ALLEN CODING
AIMS FOR 20 PER CENT GROWTH IN SCOTTISH BUSINESS OVER THE COMING YEAR
Following the appointment last
year of Scott Wilson as Regional
Sales Manager for Scotland, Allen
Coding Systems - part of ITW - is
continuing to focus on growing its
business north of the border, with
the intention of increasing sales by
20 per cent over the next 12 months.
One of the UK’s leading manufacturers
and suppliers of thermal
transfer, hot foil, ink jet and laser
coding and marking equipment, Allen
Coding is targeting primarily the
food, pharmaceutical, beverage, and
industrial processing and packaging
industries across Scotland.
Relatively untapped by Allen
Coding, Scotland provides a wider
audience for the market-leading company
which has been established for
over 35 years and is best known for its
world-class product range, personal,
professional service and problem
solving capabilities.
Allen Coding products include an
extensive range of hot foil, thermal
transfer, laser and ink jet coding and
marking technology, as well as carton
coders. The recently launched ICON
laser coder, for example, is competitively
priced, easy to use and delivers
high quality printing for applications
in the beverage, cosmetics, industrial
and electronics industries, such as
labels, cartons, plastics, glass, wood
and textiles.
The popular 53LT intermittent and
continuous thermal transfer systems
were originally developed with the
food industry and users of hot foil
coders in mind. The low-cost, high
performance units provide many of
the advanced features of more expensive
thermal transfer machines,
including 300 dpi print resolution;
cassette ribbon loading; 600-metre
ribbon capacity; 53mm x 30mm print
area with print speeds up to 400mm
per second; and a best of breed
thermal print head.
The Alexir Partnership, which
prides itself on providing customers
with a complete design to
delivery service, will be on stand
J5 at the EasyFairs exhibition in
October. A number of new and
exciting innovations will be
unveiled including the revolutionary
‘Fresh & Naked’
Unwashed Salad Tray.
The “Fresh & Naked” tray range
includes a newly developed barrier
coating called Bioptima that can be
applied to almost any carton-board.
This biodegradable Bioptima
coating, developed by the Alexir
Partnership, allows for direct food
contact and helps prevent salad
from drying out whilst enabling the
required shelf-life.
The first brand to take this packaging
material format to retail is
G’s Salads.
Tom Sene, Sales Director at the
Scott Wilson, Regional Sales Manager for
Scotland, Allen Coding Systems.
With an experienced coding specialist
covering Scotland and the
north of England, who offers extensive
knowledge of non-contact coding
in particular, and who is perfectly
placed to help organisations manage
the transition from one technology to
another, Allen Coding is confident in
its future.
Says Scott Wilson: “As an engineer
who has solved many coding challenges
I am able to work with clients
to identify the best technology for the
job.
He continues: “Plus, I’m backed up
by a service team made up of
designers as well as ‘fixers’. This
means that, as well as supplying the
best-selling hot foil technology in the
world, along with reliable thermal
transfer printers, continuous inkjet
and excellent laser systems, we can
offer the entire package, right down to
high quality consumables, 24-hour
customer service and support.”
LAUNCHES REVOLUTIONARY FULLY BIODEGRADABLE SALAD TRAY AT EASYFAIRS
Alexir Partnership said “Board
Packaging for natural products
such as un-washed baby salad leaf
normally presents many obstacles,
but we have worked closely with
G’s to overcome these. The natural
the product and the sales have far
exceeded initial forecasts”.
Anthony Gardner, Marketing
