The AutoLokP internal release option can be used to unlock the door from the inside a guarded area should an operative become trapped; by pushing the button on the rear of the unit the tongue is released from the actuator head and the door can be opened. The AutoLokP solenoid is continuously energised but when the power is cut, the actuator is released. A system like this is appropriate for applications when an element must be locked in a pre-determined position such as access to the cabin of a gantry crane. AutoLokP features a robust, stainless steel Slide Bar with an actuator at the head that can be used on both hinged and sliding doors. The slide bar design ensures that the power cannot be turned on simply by slamming the door behind an operator and features padlock holes for lockout procedures and an internal release handle which acts as an emergency stop. When the door is closed the slide bar is pushed along until the actuator tongue engages with the Autostop unit, turning the power on. Lone worker safety expert Peoplesafe, has teamed up with manufacturers of the world’s toughest phones, Sonim Technologies, to launch an intensive protection system for employees out in rough and remote settings. The new Sonim XP3 Sentinel - the world’s most rugged phone - has been designed to withstand extreme temperatures and water and has a highly durable shell to meet the demands of harsh working environments. It comes complete with software developed by Sonim in close consultation with Peoplesafe, which allows the company’s professionals to monitor and respond to lone workers aroundthe-clock and safeguard against injury, illness and personal attack. Worried employees can put monitors on greater alert when they go into highrisk situations. In an emergency, they can press a button to feed their exact location swiftly back while they are spoken to and sent assistance if necessary. There is also a ‘man down’ motion-sensor triggered if the phone falls, tilts or is stationary, which will raise an alarm if the employee is unable to do so themselves. The service offers protection for a large group of employees previously not specifically catered for by the industry. And the Sonim XP3 Sentinel, with its seamless integration with Peoplesafe’s existing solutions, meets the British Standards relating to lone worker devices and monitoring. The new BS 8484 Code of Practice for the Provision of Lone Worker Device Services has been driven by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and lone worker specialists such as Peoplesafe to promote best practice for lone workers and to reduce the number of false alarms being received and responded to by the emergency services. After winning a new contract to manage a bonded facility for a wines and spirits business, Primeline was very quickly in need of additional warehouse capacity to accommodate the much higher volumes of stock. By capitalising on the Aisle-Masters’ ability to work in narrow aisles and its excellent manoeuvrability, Primeline was able to cut down the width of the aisles needed by its old reach trucks. This allowed the rows of racking to be increased from 20 to 26 in the existing storage area, improving pallet density to such an extent that any need for costly and disruptive relocation could be avoided. Primeline’s Warehouse Manager David Preston: “we were aware of the space saving benefits of the articulated system, and together with our materials handling consultant Amlac, we arranged to trial various brands. Our drivers were immediately unanimous in their choice of the Aisle-Master as the preferred option. They appreciated the smooth and effortless operation and were particularly impressed with the steady mast controls when lifting and lowering loads from the highest pallet positions.” Lifting 1,000kg to a height of 11.4m is a tall order for an articulated truck, but Aisle-Master engineers at the manufacturing facility in Monaghan modified the design of Primeline’s fleet to meet this requirement. As all Aisle-Masters are manufactured from start to finish at the factory, a high level of customisation can be offered to suit exact customer specifications. All Aisle-Master models are designed to work both inside and out - cushioned tyres enable operation on uneven surfaces and gradients, but Primeline’s trucks work predominantly inside, storing incoming pallets and picking them again when required for consignments. The new system has been up and running or a few months now and David Preston is delighted with the outcome: “We needed a very quick turnaround to cope with the new contract, and Aisle-Master was able to deliver on this count. The trucks have boosted our storage capacity from 6,000 to 8,000 pallet spaces, and the operating environment is very comfortable and safe for our drivers.” The Aisle-Master range can work in aisles of just 1.75m, with capacities of up to 2.5 tonnes and lift heights of up to 12.5 metres, and LPG models are also available. A recentlyinstalled Fireray 5000 optical beam smoke detector sounded the alarm at 8.45am, when the area had been temporarily unmanned. When workers had left there had been nothing wrong, but the Fireray detector kept watch and quickly spotted the rising smoke. The alarm signal was picked up by the 24-hour manned security lodge, who called the fire brigade. Ten fire engines from the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service arrived within 5 minutes and quickly subdued the blaze; all staff were evacuated without incident. It is thought that the quick reaction to the fire starting is what saved the building, with the rapidity of the alarm and then the firefighters’ response minimising the scale and severity of the blaze before it could get out of control. The fire protection system installer for the building, Tim Allerston of Global EFP Ltd., said that they had recently upgraded the beam detectors from 15 year old ones, which had become unreliable and prone to false alarms and fault conditions. The new detectors performed to perfection, quickly detecting the fire and triggering the alarm - resulting in the building, and potentially lives, being saved. The Fireray 5000, manufactured by Fire Fighting Enterprises Ltd., is an advanced optical beam smoke detector. Suitable for wide-area fire protection, it uses a beam of reflected infrared (IR) light to detect interference from smoke particles across a wide area (up to 100m in length). Recent technological developments by the company have made the product more effective than ever: an automatic, motorised beam head compensation system keeps the beam working as efficiently as possible at all times, even when subject to minor building shift and dust buildup on the lens. Union delivered one of its Carbon Trust approved energy audits at The Bond Group facility, which enabled the company to secure funding for new Union Bulldoors. The Bond Group was established in 1976 and now operates across five regional sites servicing the UK employing 200 people and has an annual turnover of £15 million. Privately owned by the management team, the company is recognised as the leading refrigeration display case remanufacturer supplying all the major supermarkets from its Sheerness in Kent and Stoke on Trent branches. In 2009 The Bond Group opened its New Cabinet Division in Telford, which completed the company’s service provision to this industry. As well as utilising the Bulldoors to assist with eradicating energy loss from loading bays and despatch areas, The Bond Group enlisted Union’s help with a programme to change the internal factory lighting to become more energy-efficient. Union Industries then incorporated this into their loan submission for funding from the Carbon Trust. In addition to carrying out the audit, Union Industries provided heat and energy loss payback calculations to the Carbon Trust in order for the loan to be processed. The heat loss calculation system was independently verified by a Carbon Trust appointed consultant. The interest-free-loan provided by the Carbon Trust, is designed to pay for itself through the energy savings that replacement equipment provides. The new doors are expected to provide energy savings in the excess of £10,000 including a saving of in excess of £5,000 from the energy-efficient lighting. Union’s Bulldoors, which are part of their Matadoor Range of Hi-Speed Doors, can play a major role in preventing heat loss from commercial & industrial premises. Due to their reliable operation and fast operating speeds, the Matadoor range ensures minimal opportunity for heat loss or the ingress of cold air. The Carbon Trust, which has the aim of accelerating the move to a low carbon economy and encouraging the development of commercial low carbon technologies for the future, approved Union’s calculations and agreed a loan repayment plan directly with The Bond Group, where the energy savings from the Bulldoors’ installation would cover the monthly loan repayments. The payback period for the loan is three years, and once the loan is paid off, the savings will go straight back to The Bond Group. The drysafe RECUP (short for recuperation) batteries require no maintenance (including topping up) as the electrolyte is suspended in an Absorbed Glass Mat. The main benefit is that they offer superior high power performance (such as large power draws over short durations) and are well suited for fast and/or opportunity charging as they can accept a high charge. They are ideal for a range of applications including: • electric pallet trucks • automated guided vehicles • hybrid and electric cars (especially those that use regenerative braking) • electric boats • go-karts • cleaning machines. The spiral-wound design gives a greater surface area of positive and negative plate within the cell and is the most efficient way of liberating the stored energy from a lead acid battery. As well as being maintenance free, they are vibration resistant, can operate effectively in low temperatures and have minimal health & safety implications - due to the electrolyte being suspended in a glass microfibre mat; no electrolyte is spilt even if the battery case is damaged. They can also offer 450 charging cycles. Exide Technologies www.exide.com NETTO INSTALLS UNISTO MANTA ELECTRONIC SEAL TO ENHANCE FLEET SECURITY Netto, one of the UK’s leading discounters, has enhanced the security of its new fleet of delivery vehicles by fitting the Manta electronic seal to each trailer. Developed and supplied by Unisto, the world’s leading supplier of reusable electronic security seals to the transport industry, Manta provides a more effective way of sealing the doors of each trailer to eliminate unauthorised access as well as providing accurate data tracking every opening or closing of the doors by date and time around the clock. A Unisto Manta seal has been fitted to each of the 96 refrigerated trailers that are being operated by logistics firm C Butt on behalf of Netto under a new multi-million pound five-year contract awarded in 2009. The fleet serves 196 Netto stores throughout England from distribution centres located at South Elmsall, West Yorkshire and Daventry, Northamptonshire. States Netto’s Head of Loss Prevention Steve Teatum: “We selected the Unisto Manta after effectively discounting the use of lesser mechanical-based solutions that did not provide the required level of security and delivery performance data that would link with the geographical positioning data available through the Isotrak system to track deliveries and performance.” The Manta seal is very easy to use and generates a random 4 digit seal number on the integral LED every time the doors are closed. This unique seal number is recorded on the vehicle delivery manifest and can be visually checked at any time by pressing a single button to detect any unauthorised opening. “Manta provides us with a clear audit trail showing each time the doors are opened or closed during planned journeys and enables us to identify any anomalies and take corrective action when required,” continues Steve Teatum. “The system has already reduced losses during the delivery cycle and we expect it to continue to provide us with further efficiency gains in the future.” To assist the investigation process should the security number not match the vehicle manifest, the Manta seal stores data on the last 100 events providing a timed audit trail for detailed analysis of driver or trailer histories. The data can be downloaded via infrared (IrDA Interface) links using SealTrak, a small handheld unit with a USB connection that enables data to be exported using XML format for use in commonly used spreadsheet and database programmes. This data can also be used in conjunction with GPS-based location and performance data provided by the Isotrack Active Transport Management system used to analyse single or multidrop deliveries. The combined data produces more detailed audit trails that can show when vehicles arrive at their destinations, the time spent waiting to be unloaded, unloading periods and departure times.
