In association with the Sustainable Practices Research Group, we hosted a Summer
School on “Sustainable Ways of Living”, which was attended by over 35 PhD
students and early career researchers. As well as a range of interactive, hands on
sessions, the summer school included keynote lectures by leading advocates of
practice-based approach to sustainability transitions (Schatzki and Warde) and a
panel discussion with representatives from Tesco, the Scottish Government and
Defra. Reports of the school are available at: http://www.sprg.ac.uk/newsevents/sprg-events/sprg-summer-school
Two new awards from the ESRC for research: ‘Sustaining Growth for Innovative
New Enterprises’ (PI: Philip Shapira) and ‘Consumer Responses to Eco-innovations’
(PI: Andrew McMeekin)
The R&D Management Conference 2011 was organised in Sweden by Jeff Butler in
collaboration with the University of Linkoping on the theme of “R&D, Sustainability
& Innovation”. Jeff also presented on the topic of ‘Innovation Frontiers – systems,
services, sharing and sustainability’
The EPSRC Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW) project held its final
General Assembly, 25 November 2011, at the Royal Institution of Chartered
Surveyors. The keynote speakers were Lord Selbourne, chair of the partner's board
of LWEC, and Roger Street, Technical Director of UKCIP. Around 100 stakeholders
attended, including DfID, DCLG, Defra, EA,GLA, LCCP, TfL, the Scottish and Welsh
Governments, and London boroughs from the main case study area. UKCIP will now
fund an additional dissemination of the CREW outputs. [CREW had 45 researchers
from 14 UK universities, and was conceived in 2007 via the EPSRC's innovative and
multi-disciplinary 'ideas factory' sandpit approach. Duncan Thomas led the CREW
work on the role of decision-makers in improving resilience. Further info and video
podcasts from the final event are available: http://www.extreme-weatherimpacts.net.]
Clair Gough, Phillip Boucher and Paul Upham have been engaged in a scoping
study to map the ethical landscape of carbon capture and storage, developing a
methodology which builds on an ethical matrix approach. The study has been
funded by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D programme.
Members of the Innovation and Sustainability theme have developed excellent links with
academic groups across the University of Manchester, especially with the Tyndall Centre,
SOSS, and SED. These links have been reinforced by the establishment of the Sustainable
Consumption Institute, which benefits from significant contributions from MIoIR
researchers
In terms of knowledge transfer, we continue to enjoy a good record of engagement with
UK government departments (especially BIS and Defra – also, see highlight box). Our
connections with firms continue too, particularly in the food, construction, biofuel and
chemicals industries on innovation and sustainability issues. Notable recent examples
include work with Unilever, Costain and Akzo Nobel. Our engagement with the SCI has also
produced several lines of interaction with Tesco.
