Manchester Institute of Innovation Research ANNUAL REPORT 

FOREWORD
The Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIoIR) is proud to present its annual
report 2011. This report can only attempt to present the reader with a flavour of the
variety and depth of activities in research, engagement, executive education and teaching
conducted by staff at the Institute. It does, however, clearly show that we have had
another successful year: we have increased our research income and further improved our
research output; we have intensified our highly internationalised doctoral research
programme and further broadened our executive education; and we have engaged with
policy makers, firms and other stakeholders in a mutually beneficial manner, based on our
approach which combines critical distance with responsiveness towards the changing
needs and expectations of stakeholders. This report only lists our activities but also
summarises our major lines of research activity and illustrates our achievement in research
and engagement in 2011.
MIoIR is the largest research institute within the Manchester Business School and the
Faculty of Humanities. It is also recognised as a University Institute of The University of
Manchester. We are once again grateful for the support we have received from all levels in
the University and for the encouragement and involvement of countless external partners
in the North West, the UK, Europe and, indeed, from around the globe.
Above all, our achievements in 2011 are based on the efforts of our research and support
staff who are highly motivated, forward thinking and who consistently strive to maintain
the standards of the Institute at the highest level. Our biggest thanks, therefore, must go to
all the Institute staff.
We hope the report not only informs readers about our activities, but further encourages
them to become engaged with the activities of the Manchester Institute of Innovation
Research.
