Several MIoIR PhDs had great success in 2011 and we will seek to maintain links with them.
Christopher Guta defended his outstanding thesis on the effects of learning and innovation
on development, focusing on Malawi. He will return to his post as the Director General of
the Malawi Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre while continuing to
explore research on innovation in under developed countries. Aini Susana Ariffin submitted
a thesis on public research institutes in Malaysia and returned there in November to take
up a senior policy post in the Prime Minister’s Office, concerned with implementing
innovation policy. Hsing-Fen Lee has taken up a Research Assistant post at MIoIR, to
contribute to quantitative analysis in the ESRC project on intellectual property strategies in
service firms with Dr Panos Desyllas, and Professors Miozzo and Miles. This post was highly
competitive and Hsing Fen’s excellent quantitative research skills were a key factor in her
selection for an Institute position.
The following table give an overview of the theme distribution and the national origins of
our past (since 2007) and current PhD. This shows a particular strength in innovation
management topics and it confirms the global outreach of the Institute, especially as
regards Asia and the EU.
