ARTISTS OF THE WEEK A group of writers from Camano Island have brought their talent together and will showcase their books at the Port Susan Farmers Market in Stanwood. Their combined books represent a wide variety of fiction, non-fiction and memoir. These are the writers who will be available throughout the scheduled market days: CAMANO ISLAND WRITERS SHOWCASE Mary Ann Hayes was born and raised in Spokane, attended Eastern Washington University, then relocated to the Northwest where she raised a family with Patrick, her husband of 38 years. Growing up, her summers were spent at a mountain lake in Northern Idaho where the seeds for Adeline, her first published novel, flourished into a heartfelt tale of an old woman’s love for God, nature, and family. Her second novel, A Friend like Frank, is a contemporary romantic comedy available as an e-book through Amazon and will soon be available in print as well. The sequel, The Trouble with Tony, is scheduled to be available in print as well as in e-book format before the end of the year. Judith (Judy) Kirscht was born and raised in Chicago, raised her family in Michigan, taught writing at the Universities of Michigan and University of California, Santa Barbara before retiring to Camano Island to devote herself to her first love—writing fiction. She’s now celebrating the publication of two novels: Nowhere Else to Go, about a college town and school torn apart by the civil rights movement, and The Inheritors, the story of an ethnicallymixed woman whose discovery of her heritage in an abandoned Chicago mansion threatens her first great love. Betty McCadden, a native Washingtonian, has lived on Camano Island for the last seven years. She graduated from the University of Washington and earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Seattle Pacific University, then worked as a School Counselor in Snohomish for 22 years. She retired in 2006 after surviving a bout of cancer. She wasn’t expected to “make it through the first year” but did, in part because she found ways to enjoy life. Thinking of 101 reasons why she should enjoy being bald gave her a light hearted approach to looking at death. As a consequence, she has published her first book, 101 Benefits of Being Bald, along with Bev Paulson, her neighbor and illustrator, and her partner, Len Hoover, who did the computer work. The book is a whimsical, but poignant look at cancer. Mary E. Trimble A prolific writer, Trimble draws on personal experiences including purser and ship’s diver aboard the tall ship, M.S. Explorer, two years with the Peace Corps in West Africa, and a 13,000-mile South Pacific sailing trip aboard their Bristol 40, Impunity. Her latest work, Tubob: Two Years in West Africa with the Peace Corps, is a memoir. Trimble’s latest novel, Tenderfoot, a romantic suspense with a sub-plot of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, won Finalist in the Western Writers of America SPUR awards in 2010. Her coming-of-age novels, Rosemount and McClellan’s Bluff have been met with enthusiastic acclaim. McClellan’s Bluff was the EPIC 2004 Winner for Young Adult Fiction. Trimble lives on Camano Island with her husband, Bruce. 40 TheCrabCracker@wavecable.com
