8. Summary
The most recent area of contraceptive research focuses on the
development of extensions to the existing range of Pills, each
with different characteristics specially tailored to a specific
subgroup of women. Gracial is a Pill which is particularly
suitable for women who wish to switch to a different OC
because they experience irregular bleeding. Gracial is a
combined oral contraceptive with a unique combiphasic
regimen: a relatively estrogenic first phase of seven tablets
followed by a relatively progestogenic phase during the
remaining 15 days of the cycle. In Gracial, the combination of
EE with the highly selective progestogen desogestrel in a
22-day regimen has permitted a major reduction in the total
cycle progestogen dose with a total estrogen dose comparable
to that of many combined OCs.
