WGBH App of the Month
It’s Elemental
this month Nova’s Earth from Space (see page 13) gives us stunning new
views of our planet. But just what are we looking at What is earth and
everything on it made of While Nova’s new program provides the bigpicture
view of the planet, one of its apps—Nova Elements for iPad—
provides you with the tools you need to understand more about the
naturally occurring elements that form the ingredients of everything in
our world.
the app, which was developed here at WGBH in conjunction with
Nova’s Hunting the Elements program, takes the periodic table off the
wall and puts it into users’ hands, bringing life to the world’s elements
in colorful and dynamic ways. With it, you can explore an interactive
periodic table, build elements from their particles, construct 3d rotating
molecules and play a game hosted by The New York Times’ david Pogue.
And you also can use it to watch the two-hour companion program.
“Nova Elements turns the exploration of the elements into a game
that is updated over time, letting users develop an understanding of
what gives each element its unique properties, and revealing why the
periodic table is organized in the way it is,” says WGBH’s Lauren Aguirre,
Nova’s director of new media.
the free app has topped 330,000 downloads, and Elements’ high
quality has turned heads. The New Yorker recommended it, dubbing the
app a “digital Pick” on its Goings On blog, and itunes singled it out
for distinction on several occasions: in the 2012 back-to-school
campaign and as an Apple editor’s pick for one of 2012’s best apps
for lifelong learning.
“the app goes beyond the program on some of the science
topics that are most fascinating, fun and fundamental to fans,” says
Nova senior executive producer Paula Apsell, “in this case, exploring
the elements and how they are the building blocks for people, planets
and everything around us.”
Find Nova Elements free in the App store on itunes.
