From the President Women Who Make America Over the past 50 years, the work of millions of women has transformed every aspect of American life. And yet that story never has been told, until now. this month WGBH is proud to bring you Makers: Women Who Make America (page 18), a broadcast and digital initiative that looks at the lives of exceptional women whose pioneering contributions continue to shape the world in which we live. “this project started eight years ago when i went to Gloria steinem in the hopes of doing a film on her life, and Gloria, in her egoless way, declined,” explains executive producer dyllan mcGee, who visited WGBH’s studios in november for a preview screening and discussion. steinem explained that her story was really part of a collective of stories. mcGee and her co-producers, Betsy West and Peter Kunhardt, went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of a “living library” of video interviews with trailblazing women from all walks of life that would launch on the Web in advance of the broadcast and live well beyond it. One of those trailblazers is Kathrine Switzer, who back in 1967 was the first woman to run the Boston marathon as an official entrant—she registered as K.v. switzer—five years before the Boston Athletic Association would finally open the race to women. switzer, who joined mcGee at the WGBH podium, recalled that moment when an enraged race official physically tried to force her off the course. “i didn’t start out to be a feminist,” switzer says. “When Jock semple attacked me, it changed everything. By the time i finished the Boston marathon, i knew i wanted to help change the attitudes against women and to create opportunities for other women to run.” “i’m so happy that we’re finally hearing the stories and voices of women who make America,” says steinem, who is one of the project’s advisors as well as a featured subject. “We do what we see, not what we’re told, so an incomplete story of this country damages everyone.
