your opponent, not blasting his line with fireballs or lighting<br />

bolts. The Umenzi Tribesmen expands the role of magic in a<br />

way that enhances, rather than replaces, Battleground’s tactical<br />

strength.<br />

Umenzi priests cast spells much like range attacks – only on<br />

your turn and during the combat phase. Two spells support<br />

your own troops; you can heal damage and you can give a unit<br />

an additional attack. Two more harm the enemy, either reducing<br />

their attacks by one or – only castable by High Priests – the<br />

Killing Curse deals an immediate point of damage. Such magic<br />

is double-edged, however, for the more powerful Umenzi devotions<br />

involve psychic transference of injury. Whenever one of<br />

your spellcasters heals or harms another unit it takes one damage<br />

as well.<br />

The end result is a faction that feels wonderfully magical but<br />

remains true to the spirit of Battleground. Magic enhances the<br />

unit-based maneuvering and tactics rather than replacing them.<br />

You’ll use healing and hexes to prevent your opponent from<br />

breaking your line rather than to blow a hole in his, and you’ll<br />

struggle each turn with the myriad tactical options this provocative<br />

new faction offers.<br />
