Areas
The Arts
From photography to theater, the visual
arts to storytelling - the arts help girls’
creativity come alive. Girl Scouting
encourages girls to view the world
through the eyes of discovery by helping
them develop their creativity, follow their
instincts, and hone their communication
skills. Girl Scouts open the world up for
their interpretation and create whatever
they dream up!
Environmental
Awareness
Through Girl Scouting, girls see the earth
as their home – a place where they
care for the environment, practice
conservation, and lay a foundation for
future generations. Whether they’re
learning about endangered wildlife,
developing creative recycling projects, or
taking action with eco-friendly
community projects, girls are deepening
their awareness of their environment and
learning how they can make a
difference.
Life Skills
Girl Scouting teaches girls everyday life
skills such as healthy living habits,
financial literacy, career explorations,
and leadership development. Every
girl deserves to live a healthy life
emotionally and physically, develop
practical skills that provide financial
literacy, explore a variety of career
opportunities, and let her voice be heard
as she develops her own personal
leadership style.
Science,
Technology,
Engineering, and
Math (STEM)
Girl Scouting introduces girls of
every age to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics
activities that are relevant to everyday
life. Whether they’re discovering how a
car’s engine runs, becoming math
whizzes, or learning about careers in
STEM fields, girls are moving forward into
the future. They can design websites
or new inventions, plan for space
exploration, visit geological sites, and
more.
Program Registration
Information and
Procedures
Registrations will be accepted for events
from troops, individuals from troops,
or individually registered girls, as well as
non-Girl Scouts. All girls may participate
in our events. If a non-Girl Scout wishes
to attend, she must pay the one-time
$12 annual membership fee. This fee
must be included with the event
registration fee along with a
Membership Registration form. Once
this annual membership fee is paid, a girl
becomes a member of Girl Scouts for
the remainder of that membership year.
Our membership year runs from
October 1 - September 30 each year.
Complete an Event Registration form
if you are registering an entire troop or
only one girl, either from a troop or an
individually registered girl. Only one
event may be registered per form.
delay your registration and we only
accept payment at the Champaign
Program
Opening and
Closing Dates
The opening registration date
for programs is
February 27, 2013
The closing registration date is two
weeks before the program date unless
otherwise stated.
Registration Placement
All paper registrations received or
postmarked after the opening date will
be considered on a first-come,
first-served basis as they are received at
the Champaign Service Center.
Registrations will be accepted beginning
on the opening date until all available
slots are filled or through the closing
registration date, whichever comes first.
We will not accept registrations before
the opening date.
Any registration received after the
activity is full will be placed on a waiting
list. Additional sessions/dates may be
added after the closing date. You will be
notified and fees will be returned if your
troop/girl does not get in to the activity.
Those troops or individually registered
girls who are placed in an activity will
receive an email confirmation two weeks
prior to the event. Confirmations may
include additional information
regarding the activity (e.g., schedule,
what to bring, clothing, etc.).
General Program Info
correct girl-to-adult ratio for troops for
events, camping, or travel. Individual girls
nonrefundable. If an activity must be
cancelled or rescheduled, notification
will be given. If the activity is cancelled or
the rescheduled date is not convenient
for your attendance, fees will be
Cookie Dough and Nutty Bucks
Cookie Dough or Nutty Bucks earned
from the 2012-13 Girl Scout Product
Sales Program may be used to pay for
events within this guide. Payment made
with the Cookie Dough card must be on
or before the card’s expiration date. If
Cookie Dough/Nutty Bucks is used to
pay for an event and the council/service
center cancels or reschedules the event,
the Cookie Dough/Nutty Bucks may be
used toward another event within this
guide. Cookie Dough/Nutty Bucks will
not be refunded in the form of cash or
another card. Nutty Bucks and Cookie
Dough cards expire September 21, 2013.
Extreme Weather Conditions
In the event of extreme weather
conditions, attempts will be made to
contact the troop leader or person in
charge, as indicated on the
activity registration form. Call the
Program Specialist’s cell phone number
listed in your confirmation letter for
emergency instructions or to check to
see if a program has been cancelled.
Supervision of Other Children
Troops are responsible for collecting
permission slips and meeting girl-toadult
ratio (unless otherwise noted).
Girls registering individually must attend
with an adult (unless otherwise noted).
Adults in attendance will be expected to
supervise and assist with the girls. Family
events are the exception to this rule and
are noted in the description of the event.
Contributions
On the registration forms you will notice
a place to make an optional contribution
to help financially disadvantaged girls.
This campaign allows families to make
a gift on behalf of girls who would
otherwise not be able to afford to attend
Girl Scout programs. Your support will
help provide the Girl Scout experience
to girls with a financial need, thereby
assisting us in our goal to give every girl
within our jurisdiction access to the
leadership development, character
building, and fun that Girl Scouting
provides.
Families in our community are in need
of our help now more than ever in light
of recent cuts at the state level to health
and human services. A recent survey of
Community Service Project
local family and child-serving agencies
reported an overwhelming need for
diapers for their families, while public
assistance programs - such as the
Federal Women, Infants and Children
program (WIC) - do not provide financial
assistance for diapers.
Are you looking for a great cause to
become involved with Help us help our
local families by starting a diaper drive in
your community. While any and all
diapers are appreciated, there is a need
for non-newborn sizes (size 2 and up).
Once your troop has collected your
diapers, take them to a local shelter or
food pantry to be distributed to local
families in need.
to a safe and nurturing environment
for their children. This voluntary
accreditation assures parents that camp
practices have been measured against
national standards and go a step beyond
a state’s basic licensing requirements.
Accreditation is based on a
commitment by the camp to undergo
a thorough review of its operations –
from staff qualifications and training to
emergency management. The American
Camp Association has created a website
for parents and families which includes
tips on getting your camper ready for
camp at www.campparents.org.
Campership
Assistance Fund
On the registration forms you will notice
a place to make an optional contribution
to our Campership Assistance Fund.
This fund allows families to make a gift
on behalf of girls who otherwise would
not be able to afford to attend Girl Scout
camp and summer activities. Your
support will help provide the Girl Scout
experience to girls with a financial need,
thereby assisting us in our goal to give
every girl within our jurisdiction access
to the leadership development,
character building, and fun that Girl
Scouting provides.
Who are the camp staff
Our camp staff are enthusiastic,
talented, and caring adults who are
excited about having lots of fun at camp
and building girls of courage, confidence,
and character. The selection process
for camp staff includes screening their
experience, their ability to serve as role
models for girls, and their genuine desire
to work with children. Interviews,
reference checks, and thorough
background screening are all part of the
selection process. Staff training includes
a full week of first aid, CPR, safety and
emergency management, outdoor skills,
team building, helping children deal with
homesickness, understanding age level
characteristics, and more. Staff who
facilitate high adventure, horseback
riding, water activities, and trips are
trained and/or have certifications. Many
of our camp staff return year after year,
building relationships with returning
campers and furthering their own
development as camp professionals.
Volunteers and council staff also assist
as necessary.
CAMP TRADITIONS
summer camps/resident camp info
Camp Magic
During their time at camp campers enjoy the unique magic and special traditions of resident camp, from
camouflaging for a wild walk to save our beloved camp fairies to challenge meals that might leave a camper
temporarily tied to her neighbor. Captain Hook causes a big shipwreck at Camp Peairs in the dining hall at some point
each week, making a very pirate-like mess out of lunch, and at Camp Tapawingo the wild west bandits might steal
lunch, requiring campers to work together to master challenges to get their food back! Read your packing list carefully
so you can ensure your camper is ready for all the exciting activities and adventures that await her!
Camp Kapers
Kapers are chores girls share while attending camp. Each staff member will model and teach campers proper ways
to care for the environment and their camp surroundings. Each unit is responsible for the upkeep and cleaning of
their area and for additional daily camp responsibilities. This may include cleaning the dining hall, latrines, bathhouse,
grounds, etc. Girls are closely monitored to make sure that established health and safety procedures are used in
completing cleaning tasks.
EQUESTRIAN
CAMPS
OVERVIEW
Girl Scouts of Central Illinois offers two kinds of equestrian
experiences at camp – full-time equestrian camps with the
primary focus on equestrian activities, and part-time
equestrian camps with an occasional opportunity to ride, while
the main focus of the session is on something else. This gives
campers the opportunity to choose the programs that best fit
their interests.
Participants in full-time equestrian sessions will be scheduled
3-4 hours each day for equestrian-related activities. Participants
in part-time equestrian sessions will have one or two scheduled
horse times during the week for 2-4 hours each. Equestrian time
will be split between ground lessons (grooming, tack, etc.) and
riding lessons (in-the-saddle activities).
In order to provide the best possible program, all campers in
horse programs will be split into groups based on riding skill.
During extreme weather such as heavy rain or high heat,
riding lessons will be adapted or cancelled in order to protect
the health of campers and horses and in those cases camp staff
will plan other horse-related activities such as bathing horses or
braiding manes.
Boots and helmets are provided for riding, and campers who
wish to bring their own must check with the Equine Program
Specialist to ensure equipment meets safety standards. Any
questions regarding riding skills or appropriate boots and
helmets should be directed to Ann Bower, Equine Program
Specialist, at abower@girlscouts-gsci.org.
Registration Opens February 27, 2013!
camp registration
Step 1: Registration Form or eRegistration
scan with your smart phone
to go to eReg now!
For most expedient processing, utilize online eRegistration at GetYourGirl Power.org. Registration forms are
available at the back of this book and at your service center or online at GetYourGirlPower.org. Complete a separate
registration form and payment for each camp session and program.
Buddy Requests
Two campers who want to share a tent at resident camp must complete the Buddy line on the registration form.
Campers may only request ONE buddy and placement is not guaranteed. Large buddy group placement in the same
tent or unit is not possible. Day campers do not need buddies as they are put into age-level groups for better
programming and camper experience.
Friday Family Lunch
Join your camper for a camp-style meal from noon-1:00 p.m. Check-in begins at 11:45 a.m. and the cost for this lunch
is $5.00 per visiting family member, with a limit of two visitors per family. Not available at Community Day Camps.
portion of the registration form to purchase.
Step 2: Submitting the Form
For most expedient processing, utilize online eRegistration at GetYourGirlPower.org.
Paper registrations received by end of business day on February 27, 2013, will be drawn randomly for placement in camp
sessions, ensuring that all campers have an equal opportunity to attend their first choice. Registrations received after
February 27, 2013, will be placed as space is available and waiting lists will be kept as needed. Registration closes two weeks
prior to the start of the camp session. Submit a completed registration form with a non-refundable deposit of $50 for
each camp session or full payment for sessions $100 or under. Faxed registrations must include a debit or credit card
to add second and third choices on form, and register early.
Fax: 217-328-1548 Phone: 888-623-1237
Confirmation packets will be emailed/mailed beginning in April.
Step 3: Medical Records
All campers must have a completed health history and all resident campers (including mini-resident) must also have a
physical completed within 12 months of the last day of their camp session. Health forms from previous years of camp are
not available; keep a copy of the health form for your records. Bring the health form and all other camp paperwork to camp
check-in. Please contact the camp director two weeks prior to camp if there are any special medical or dietary needs so
we can make accommodations. Ensure your camper is able to properly apply sunblock and bug repellent as they are
expected to do so with limited assistance from friends and counselors.
Step 4: Payment
Payments may be made by cash, check, money order, or credit card. All camp fees must be paid in full two weeks prior to
the camp session. Campers who carry an outstanding balance two weeks prior to the camp session will lose their spot and
deposit. Camp payment is not accepted at camp.
Cookie Dough/Nutty Bucks must be sent in prior to, or with, the final payment and cannot be accepted after the
final bill is paid. Cookie Dough/Nutty Bucks cannot be submitted for a cash refund or used as the initial deposit.
Financial Assistance - Camperships
If the camp fee is a concern, you may complete the Campership Financial Assistance application on page 37 or
online at GetYourGirlPower.org. Camp scholarships are made possible by the council and generous donors in the
community who want every girl to be able to attend camp. Campers must first use any available Cookie Dough
toward the camp fee. Campers may only attend one session on financial assistance. All information will remain
confidential.
Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted in writing and will be considered at the discretion of the Director of Program. No
refund will be issued if a camper is sent home due to unacceptable behavior or homesickness or if the camper is a
“no show” for the session. The deposit fee will not be refunded once the registration has been processed.
Girl Planning and Badge Work
One of the ways we see that our campers grow in courage, confidence, and character is by allowing them to work together to
create their own experience at camp. Counselors facilitate this process as campers create the rules for the group as well as
the schedule for the week. Counselors work with campers to focus activities on Girl Scout Journeys and badges. Campers
may choose topics that are unrelated to their program area or stick to their program area. Badges will not be included; you
may purchase them after camp at your local service center.
Changes in Activities
The number and types of activities completed by campers depends on girl planning and interests of the group and may vary
from the session description. Activities may be modified or rescheduled depending on weather, group behavior, or available
materials. If the weather is inclement, girls may not be able to participate in activities that are affected by rain, storms, and
extreme heat, including but not limited to horseback riding, boating, and archery.
Meals
Day campers receive a morning snack, lunch, and an afternoon snack (snacks only at Community Day Camps) and resident
campers will receive all meals, as well as girl-planned snacks. Meals are nutritious, balanced, and served family style,
allowing campers to control what goes on their plates. Assorted healthy snacks are available in the dining hall during the
day. For campers with special dietary needs due to medical conditions and/or religious beliefs, contact the camp director
two weeks prior to camp to discuss the scheduled menu and necessary accommodations. In these cases campers may be
allowed to bring supplemental/alternative food items, which must be turned in at check-in. Do not pack food/snacks into
camper’s luggage, as it attracts animals and insects into the tents and cabins. For family events, road trips, and core camping,
meal availability is indicated in the description of the event or activity.
Counselor/ Camper Ratio
Girl Scout Daisies (entering grade 1) – 2 adults per 6 girls
Girl Scout Brownies (entering grades 2 – 3) – 2 adults per 12 girls
Girl Scout Juniors (entering grades 4 – 5) – 2 adults per 16 girls
Teens (entering grades 6 – 12) – 2 adults per 20 girls
Note: Day and mini-resident campers are put into age-level groups. A camper will never be alone with an adult at camp; she
will always be with an additional staff member or another camper. In situations where one-on-one conversations or medical
attention must take place the camper and staff member will be within eyesight of other staff or campers.
Cell Phones and Electronics
In order to provide participants with the best possible camp experience, cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed
at camp and girls do not have readily available access to phones or computers. We understand that in our technology-based
society, this may be a challenge; however, this gives campers the opportunity to challenge themselves, trust others, and
solve problems on their own. Parents are welcome to call and speak to the camp director or camp nurse about their camper.
In case of an emergency, parents/guardians or the emergency contact person will be contacted. We encourage families to
send mail, care packages, and one-way e-mail to their campers.
Trading Post
Each GSCI camp has a camp store offering a variety of camp souvenirs: T-shirts, bags, water bottles, stuffed animals, pens,
patches, and more. Campers typically find that $15-$25 will give them the ability to buy what they would like. This money is
collected at check-in.
