About the Price of our Books... Q: I enjoy automotive manuals but consider their price to be rather high. A: A $25-40 (US) price point for any technical book is extremely competitive considering the research, special equipment and time which are required to support their production. Specialty automotive magazine subscriptions cost between $20 and $50 -- and half of what you get for this price is advertising copy. Some magazines such as Road&Track, EuropeanCar, and Auto und Sport provide very good technical information in their articles, but Volvo-specific data is rare! The primary publisher of technical books in the U.S. is the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). SAE publishes and sells most of its technical works in paper-back, ring bound format at prices ranging from $50.00 to $75.00. Few, if any of these books are written to support a particular make of car, and coverage of Volvo models is almost non-existent. Volvo Technical Series, distributed by Volvo Cars of North America, for a specific model/year cost about $500.00 to $800.00. These books provide definitive advice on repair (I highly recommend these books if you are planning do-it-yourself repairs) but do not address preventive maintenance or performance modification. Price isn't everything; it's value that counts most. To that end, it is important to consider the advantage of owning books which fill a need. If one of our books' many tips prevent accelerated wear or breakage, an ill-advised expense, or 1/2 hour of shop labor, then they will have proven their worth. Readers' comments indicate strong support for our books and suggest a loyal and dedicated audience.
