Remember in Prayer
As members of the parish faith community, it is
our responsibility to remember both in concrete and
spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each
week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember
all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.
We experience many blessings because of their remembering
us. And so...please remember in your prayers:
Prayer to Saint Joseph for Success in Work
Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those
who are devoted to labor, obtain for me
the grace to work conscientiously,
putting the call of duty above my many
sins; to work with thankfulness and joy,
considering it an honor to employ and
develop, by means of labor, the gifts
received from God; to work with order,
peace, prudence and patience, never surrendering to
weariness or difficulties; to work, above all, with
purity of intention, and with detachment from self,
having always death before my eyes and the account
which I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of
good omitted, of vain complacency in success so fatal
to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after
thy example, O Patriarch Joseph. Such shall be my
motto in life and death.
Amen.
A Prayer for the Souls
in Purgatory
- by Saint Gertrude
Eternal Father,
I offer Thee the most precious Blood
of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses
said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls
in Purgatory.
A Prayer for the Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to
strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed
Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions
that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored
by their faith, protected by Your presence and
comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You
and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger
with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty,
they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to
the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Amen.
Prayer to St. Anthony for lost items
St. Anthony, perfect imitator of Jesus,
who received from God the special
power of restoring lost things, grant that
I may find (name the lost item) which has
been lost.
At least restore to me peace and
tranquility of mind, the loss of which has
afflicted me even more than my material
loss. To this favor, I ask another of you: that I may
always remain in possession of the true good that is
God. Let me rather lose all things than lose God, my
supreme good. Let me never suffer the loss of my
greatest treasure, eternal life with God. Amen.

FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST
Mark’s Gospel account today is built on a double astonishment or amazement: the neighbors and family of
Jesus are astonished that he taught in the synagogue with wisdom and worked powerful signs. Jesus, in turn, is
amazed that they have no faith in him because they know his origins, not because of any fault with his teaching or
ministry. As with many of Mark’s passages, we get a rather intimate glimpse here of the human part of Jesus’
two‐fold nature. To reinforce his point, Mark tells of Jesus’ return to his native place, and further points out that
he is in the midst of his own family members there. From the very people he expected the most, Jesus received the
least. In the day of the Gospel’s writing, Mark was attempting to illustrate a lesson to the house of Israel: the God
of the covenant expected the greatest faith from the house of Israel, but often received the least. This is a good
source for reflection on our part, we who are Jesus’ followers today. For the wisdom of Christ to continue and for
our lives to be seen as signs of his power, he must expect and be able to find great faith among us. Will he Can he
Does he Or is he, once again, amazed by its absence
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When Catholicism encounters a culture, it tends to approach the culture with a measure of respect for its
key customs, especially those touching family life. Around the world, these long‐established customs are often
received into the liturgy, sometimes with a new level of interpretation. From Old Mexico, the custom of the lasso
(“cord”) has migrated across borders, and is now firmly established in the marriage liturgy of Spanish‐speaking
Catholics in the United States. It’s a large cord, sometimes resembling rosary beads, looped around the necks of
the newlyweds in a figure‐eight shape. It is a great honor for a person, normally a godparent or close relative, to
place the lasso around the shoulders of the couple, groom first. The lasso, a symbol of profound unity, remains in
place throughout the liturgy until removed, usually by the priest. The bride keeps the lasso as a memento of the
day, a sign of her ties of love to her husband in heart and home. The tender ministry of the godparent in this
ceremony clearly links this sacrament of vocation with baptism. It’s not unusual to see the lasso made of fragrant
orange blossoms, harking back to very ancient pre‐Christian rituals seeking the blessings of fertility and
happiness.
CALL for: Artists, Crafter, and Vendors
It remains our sincere hope that through word and
deed, education and example, we young and old one
heritage or another, would all come to know that our
care for Our Church — His really, is done through
small and not so small gestures of help and support. As
a source of hope and inspiration it is our intention to
publish those names in print who have done outstanding
work in the course of the week to “plant a
rose” so to speak along the way as we carry the cross
in the glory of the victory “He” won. Our part though
small can and does grow. We might need to see the
proof. The names are both a thank you and attempt to
have lots of roses where ever “the cross” is.
WHAT THORN . . .
Today’s Readings:
Ezekiel 2:2–5; Psalm 123:1–4; 2
Corinthians 12:7–10; Mark 6:1–6
The Holy Spirit from time to time draws
the veil of silence across a particular passage
of scripture. Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” in
today’s second reading is one of those silent
places, for Paul—much to the frustration of
centuries of Chri‐stians—never tells us
precisely what his thorn in the flesh is. His
friends in Corinth most likely knew what he
was referring to, which was enough for him.
People have speculated that the thorn was
any‐thing from bad eyesight to rampant lust.
But all this speculation misses the point, for
in his weakness, Paul comes to know and live
the paradox of the cross of Christ: it is in our
weakness that God’s greatest strength can be
made manifest. When we are strong, we
imagine the strength is ours; when we are
weakest, we know that any strength or
power we might have comes from God alone.
THE THORN OF SELF‐DOUBT
The neighbors and family of Jesus in Mark’s Gospel passage today think that Jesus has a thorn: his
dubious credentials to be a teacher in the synagogue or a worker of mighty deeds. Some of us might think that
we have this “thorn” of insufficient qualifications to be witnesses for God’s plan of salvation in Christ. Sometimes
we use this imaginary “thorn” of ours to excuse ourselves from the challenging work of living “thy kingdom
come” or to lead ourselves into a false humility about our inadequacy as disciples. We can learn a lesson from
Jesus and Paul today. Each of us, in spite of physical or personal shortcomings or limitations (real or imagined),
is called and chosen to be a messenger of the saving grace of God, each in our own way. Whether we are spouse,
parent, child, student, worker, employer— whatever role we have in life, God can work in us and through us to
be signs of grace for others. When we find ourselves afflicted with the thorn of self‐doubt, let us use that
weakness to find our strength in God, and through our faith in Christ, continue to proclaim the Good News of
salvation.
Dear Friends,
I come from Iwkowa, a small town near Nowy
Sącz. It is where I spent my childhood together with my
sisters: Alina, Małgorzata and Dominika. During high
school I received culinary education and cooking has
been my passion until now. I entered diocesan seminary
in Tarnów in 1999 and I spent there three years studying
theology and deepening my spiritual life. Three years
later, responding to the invitation of Francis Cardinal
George, I came to the United States to continue my
studies. In 2007, I was ordained to the priesthood and
started my service in St. Thecla parish in Chicago. I spent
there two fruitful years. 13 May of 2009 Cardinal George
appointed me as vicar in St. Ferdinand parish.
I am excited with the possibility of serving in this
parish. I hope, that my interest in the Sacred Scripture,
psychology, music and theatre along with eagerness in
serving God and you, my dear parishioners, will fruit in
creating many new projects that will help all of us to open
ourselves more to God graces and will tighten our
communal bonds. I count on your cooperation.
Please, remember me in your prayers. I assure
you, that you are in mine.
Remain in the love of Christ.
MODLITWA O UŚWIĘCENIE KAPŁANÓW
O Jezu, Wiekuisty,
Najwyższy Kapłanie,
zachowaj Twoich kapłanów
w opiece Twego Najświętszego Serca,
gdzie nikt nie może im zaszkodzić.
Zachowaj nieskalanymi ich namaszczone dłonie,
które codziennie dotykają Twojego Świętego Ciała.
Drodzy Przyjaciele,
Pochodzę z małej miejscowości
Iwkowa, blisko Nowego Sącza. Tam spędziłem
swoje dzieciństwo, wraz z moimi młodszymi
siostrami, Alicją, Małgorzatą i Dominiką.
Ukończyłem średnią szkołę w kierunku kulinarnym,
a gotowanie do dzisiaj jest moją pasją.
W 1999 roku wstąpiłem do seminarium w Tarnowie
i spędziłem tam trzy lata na intensywnej
nauce i formowaniu życia duchowego. W 2002
roku, na zaproszenie Kardynała Francis
George, przyjechałem do USA, aby tutaj kontynu‐ować
moje studia teologiczne. w 2007
roku zostałem wyświęcony i posłany do parafii
św. Tekli w Chicago, aby tam służyć jako wikar‐iusz.
Spędziłem tam dwa bardzo owocne
lata. 13 Maja 2009 roku ksiądz Kardynał
mianował mnie wikariuszem Parafii św. Ferdynanda
w Chicago.
Z wielką radością przystępuję do mojej
służby w nowej parafii. Dziękuję ks. Zdzisławowi,
Proboszczowi parafii św. Ferdynanda,
oraz wszystkim parafianom za tak ciepłe przyjęcie
mnie w tym nowym dla mnie miejscu.
Mam nadzieję służyć Bogu i Wam całym sobą.
Moje zainteresowania to literatura biblijna,
psychologia, muzyka i teatr. Wierzę również,
że wspólnie uda nam się stwożyć wiele nowych
projektów, które pomogą nam zbliżyć się
do Boga i do siebie wzajemnie. Nie ukrywam,
że liczę na Waszą współpracę.
Proszę pamiętajcie o mnie w Waszych
modlitwach, a ja zapewniam, że zawsze będę
pamiętał o Was w moich.
Trwajcie w miłości Chrystusowej,
ks. Robert Pajor
Zachowaj czystymi ich wargi,
które zroszone są Twoją Najdroższą Krwią.
Zachowaj czystymi ich serca,
naznaczone wspaniałą pieczęcią Twojego kapłaństwa.
Spraw, aby wzrastali w miłości i wierności Tobie,
chroń ich przed zepsuciem i skażeniem tego świata.
Wraz z mocą przemiany chleba i wina,
udziel im również mocy przemiany serc.
Błogosław ich trudowi, aby wydał obfite owoce.
Niech dusze, którym służą
będą dla nich radością i pociechą tu, na ziemi,
a także wieczną koroną w życiu przyszłym.
Zapisy do szkoły!
Dodatkowe dni zapisów do
szkoły i sprzedaż książek odbędą
się w dniach 1, 2, 3 września
ON TVs, PLANES, LIVERS, AND THORNS
Copyright 2009 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)
My mother‐in‐law called several evenings ago looking for her
daughter. I told Shirley that Gail wasn’t home and that I wasn’t
sure when she’d be returning. I also asked Shirley if she wanted
Gail to call her when she got back. I must admit that I was seeking
a “yes” or “no” answer. What I got was a full‐blown description of
Shirley’s problem. Something about how she’d bought a new TV
and it was delivered but the guy put it down in the middle of the
floor and no one was around to move it for her and she didn’t
know what to do. I told her that I could move it for her, but I had
no car for the evening so I’d have to ride my bike over if she
really needed it done right then and there. She said no, adding
that she’d just wait for Bob, her live‐in grandson, to return home.
Not long after this, I heard of that Air France jet that disappeared
four hours or so into its flight from Rio to Paris with 228
people on board. Details were sketchy coming in and I don’t think
that the experts have figured it all out even now. I recall that
there was no indication of a mayday sent by the crew, but that the
plane itself sent some kind of automatic message reporting electrical
failures. Later, some of the wreckage started showing up.
The latest theory I heard is that the plane came undone in midair.
Great. Per published reports, French President Nicolas
Sarkozy said shortly after the Airbus had vanished, “The chances
of finding survivors are tiny.” His assessment has proven to be
accurate.
And pretty much throughout Shirley’s TV dilemma and the
plane going down and to this day, my brother‐in‐law has been
dealing with some serious health issues. I just returned from St.
Louis where I visited with him and my sister Mary and I’m happy
to report that John’s got a new liver. He went on the transplant
list last Friday, and‐‐thank God‐‐the donor liver arrived at 2:00
AM on Sunday. The surgery was long. Actually, John had to undergo
two surgeries because his blood pressure was so low during
the first one that the doctors stopped it. They found some
troubling infection as well. John looks like he’s been through the
ringer because he has, but he shook my hand the other day and
smiled, and we all pray that his recovery continues as well as it’s
begun.
I remember telling Gail not long before the transplant
that we all have issues to deal with. Shirley wasn’t happy because
her TV was in the wrong spot. John was being poked daily as his
liver failed before my sister’s eyes. And two hundred‐some people
were on top of the world one minute, and on the floor of the
Atlantic a few unimaginable minutes later. Per the Apostle today
in his letter to the Corinthians, “That I, Paul, might not become
too elated…a thorn in the flesh was given to me…Three times I
begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to
me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in
weakness.” Like the man‐God dying on a tree. Our individual
thorns vary, but we all have them. May we forever bear them
well.
