If you decide <strong>to</strong> use an electrician who is not registered with one <strong>of</strong> the mentioned<br />

schemes <strong>to</strong> carry out a periodic <strong>in</strong>spection or portable appliance test, it is your<br />

responsibility <strong>to</strong> ensure that the electrician is competent <strong>to</strong> undertake the work.<br />

The technical qualifications <strong>of</strong> the electrician be<strong>in</strong>g employed can help you <strong>to</strong> decide<br />

whether a particular electrician is competent, although great care may still be needed<br />

if the judgement is based on qualifications alone.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> the relevant nationally-recognised qualifications that an electrician may<br />

hold are:<br />

<strong>Electrical</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallations and regulations qualifications<br />

NVQ/SVQ Level 3 <strong>in</strong> <strong>Electrical</strong> Installation Work<br />

SCOTVEC National Certificate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Electrical</strong> Installation<br />

City & Guilds 2360 Part 2 (<strong>Electrical</strong> Installation Competencies) or previously Course ‘B’<br />

City & Guilds 2382-10/2382-20 (17th Edition) Certificate or an equivalent electrical<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation qualification.<br />

<strong>Electrical</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection and test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

City & Guilds 2392-10 (Certificate <strong>in</strong> Fundamental Inspection, Test<strong>in</strong>g and Initial<br />

Verification)<br />

City & Guilds 2391-10 (Certificate <strong>in</strong> Inspection, Test<strong>in</strong>g and Certification <strong>of</strong> <strong>Electrical</strong><br />

Installations)<br />

Alternatives <strong>to</strong> City & Guilds qualifications such as EAL awarded qualifications may be<br />

acceptable<br />

Note: The Scottish Qualification Authority Tailored Award <strong>in</strong> Design and Verification <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Electrical</strong> Installations may be <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> lieu <strong>of</strong> the City & Guilds 2382 and/or City & Guilds<br />

2391 assessment.<br />

It is recommended that persons employed <strong>to</strong> carry out electrical <strong>in</strong>stallation and/or<br />

periodic <strong>in</strong>spection report<strong>in</strong>g hold qualifications <strong>in</strong> electrical <strong>in</strong>stallation/regulation<br />

and <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>spect<strong>in</strong>g and test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
