Where a Recommendation Code 1 is given, the client will be advised immediately, <strong>in</strong><br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, that urgent work is necessary <strong>to</strong> remedy the deficiency. This action is necessary<br />

<strong>to</strong> satisfy the duties imposed on the <strong>in</strong>spec<strong>to</strong>r and others by the Health and <strong>Safety</strong> at<br />

Work etc Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.<br />

Code 2<br />

A Code 2 is <strong>to</strong> be used <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicate that the observed deficiency requires action <strong>to</strong><br />

remove potential danger.<br />

The person order<strong>in</strong>g the report should be advised that, whilst the safety <strong>of</strong> those us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>in</strong>stallation may not be at immediate risk, remedial action should be taken as soon<br />

as possible <strong>to</strong> improve the safety <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stallation.<br />

Code 3<br />

A Code 3 could <strong>to</strong> be used <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicate that the <strong>in</strong>spec<strong>to</strong>r was unable <strong>to</strong> come <strong>to</strong> a<br />

conclusion about an aspect <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stallation or, alternatively, that the observation was<br />

outside the agreed purpose, extent or limitations <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>spection, but has come <strong>to</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>spec<strong>to</strong>r’s attention dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>spection and test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Code 4<br />

This code is <strong>to</strong> be used <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicate that certa<strong>in</strong> items have been identified as not<br />

comply<strong>in</strong>g with the requirements <strong>of</strong> the current issue <strong>of</strong> BS 7671, but that the users <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>in</strong>stallation are not <strong>in</strong> any danger as a result.<br />

The person order<strong>in</strong>g the report should be advised that the code is not <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>to</strong><br />

imply that the <strong>in</strong>stallation is unsafe, but that careful consideration should be given <strong>to</strong><br />

the benefits <strong>of</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g those aspects <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stallation.<br />

Summary<br />

The electrician will also give a summary <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>spection <strong>in</strong> the report, which will give<br />

a clear <strong>in</strong>dication <strong>of</strong> the condition <strong>of</strong> the electrical <strong>in</strong>stallation, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> account all<br />

relevant circumstances.<br />
