Further Guidance Relat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Periodic<br />
Inspection Reports<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the periodic <strong>in</strong>spection the electrician will check the electrical <strong>in</strong>stallation<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st the requirements <strong>of</strong> BS 7671 - Requirements for <strong>Electrical</strong> Installations (IEE<br />
Wir<strong>in</strong>g Regulations).<br />
The periodic <strong>in</strong>spection will take <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> account all relevant circumstances<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
adequacy <strong>of</strong> earth<strong>in</strong>g and bond<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
suitability <strong>of</strong> the switchgear and controlgear, for example, old fuseboxes with<br />
double-pole fus<strong>in</strong>g and/or wooden enclosures, are likely <strong>to</strong> need replac<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
serviceability <strong>of</strong> accessories and light fitt<strong>in</strong>gs, for example, older round-p<strong>in</strong> sockets,<br />
sockets mounted on skirt<strong>in</strong>g boards, round pattern light<strong>in</strong>g switches and braided<br />
flexible cords connect<strong>in</strong>g ceil<strong>in</strong>g roses <strong>to</strong> lampholders, may require replacement<br />
due <strong>to</strong> unsuitability or deterioration,<br />
types <strong>of</strong> wir<strong>in</strong>g systems and their condition, for example, cables coated <strong>in</strong> black<br />
rubber (phased out <strong>in</strong> the 1960s) and cables coated <strong>in</strong> lead or fabric (pre-1948),<br />
may be <strong>in</strong> poor condition and need replac<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
extent <strong>of</strong> any wear and tear, damage or other deterioration <strong>of</strong> other parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>stallation<br />
provision <strong>of</strong> residual current devices (RCDs) for socket-outlets that may be used <strong>to</strong><br />
supply electrical equipment used outdoors.<br />
presence <strong>of</strong> adequate identification and notices<br />
changes <strong>in</strong> use <strong>of</strong> the premises which have led <strong>to</strong>, or might lead <strong>to</strong>, deficiencies <strong>in</strong><br />
the <strong>in</strong>stallation.<br />
Periodic <strong>in</strong>spection report observations and recommendations<br />
The electrician carry<strong>in</strong>g out the <strong>in</strong>spection will provide a periodic <strong>in</strong>spection report<br />
(PIR) <strong>to</strong> record the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>spection. In addition <strong>to</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> body <strong>of</strong> the<br />
report, which will identify departures from the requirements <strong>of</strong> BS 7671 and provide an<br />
overall assessment <strong>of</strong> the suitability <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stallation for cont<strong>in</strong>ued use, the report<br />
should be accompanied by schedules <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection and test results.<br />
