The Vineyard, September/October, 2007 Rare Offering of Older Vins Doux Nature In those appellations from the South of France (Maury, Rivesaltes, Banyuls), there is a long tradition of producing fortified wines. The winemaking is very similar to normal wines but the fermentation is stopped by the addition of alcohol to keep a sufficient sweetness (16° alc.). The winemakers keep the best of their production of the best years to beef up the weak vintages. These particular wines have been undisturbed in 500 litre casks at the domaines and only recently bottled. Deep tawny in color with aromas and flavors of coffee, raisins, and caramel. Ready to drink now, this is an ideal wine to savor after dinner, and requires no decanting. Lebanon. He installed vats and oak casks in the cool basements where the temperature is ideal for young wines. The capacity was enlarged by creating underground galleries, 15 meters deep. Carved into the mountainside, the galleries hold more than a million bottles of maturing wines. Serge Hocar learned winemaking at the University of Bordeaux under Professor Emile Peynaud. In 1984 he was Decanter Magazine’s first-ever “Man of the Year.” Tasting through the range of vintages is a revelation. 1999 Ch. The vintage portos have been prized since the nineteenth century when the poet Vega Cabral wrote, “If the wine district were a golden ring, Roeda would be the diamond.” Since its acquisition by The Fladgate Partnership in 2001, traditional wine making techniques have been reintroduced on the estate and major investments have been put into the estate’s vineyards. Tasting Notes: “Inky black with color with purple highlights. The heady and exotic nose abounds in complex floral and woodland scents set against a background of rich, luscious fruit. Resiny aromas of eucalyptus and gumcistus combine with wild herbal notes of lavender and mint. The palate is full and round, crammed with flavors of plum, cherry and blackcurrant jam. Of the 2005 Vintage, only 550 cases of 12/75cl of the very finest wine from Senhora da Ribeira have been selected, all of which will be released ‘en primeur’ during the spring of 2007. Named after the small chapel between the Quinta house and the river, Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is magnificently situated on the north bank of the river (directly opposite Quinta do Vesuvio) in the Upper Douro Valley. Originally acquired by Dow’s in 1890, the superb quality of the grapes produced at Senhora da Ribeira’s south-facing vineyards, has long made its Ports one of the principal components of Dow’s Vintage Ports in ‘declared’ years. Tasting Notes: “Senhora da Ribeira 2005 is an opaque, black-colored Vintage Port packed with concentrated aromas of juicy ripe blackberries and fresh floral notes. On the palate, it’s loaded with fresh and powerful wild red-fruit flavors, which lead into rich, black chocolate notes. The wine is balanced by complex, attractive and peppery tannins—it is the very essence of Vintage Port.” Ruper Symington, Joint 2005 Fonseca Quinta de Panascal _____________________________ 54.99 Fonseca’s estate of Quinta do Panascal is one of the most famous of the historic Upper Douro estates and has long been regarded as one of the prime sources of quality port in the region. It was here where Fonseca brought Organic Cultivation to Port wine. Tasting Notes. “Opaque purple black with a narrow magenta rim. The nose is rich and exuberant, brimming with dark, seductive berry and cassis aromas laced with licorice and treacle. The round, luscious palate blackfollows through with a dense jammy infusion of wild berries and a mouthful of velvety tannins.
