Best of the Bunch!
california chardonnay
“chardonnay is, in many ways, almost
too easy to produce—and sometimes
it seems like the world is overflowing
with mediocre examples—but creating
a great chardonnay, full of vibrant fruit,
is not so simple. the most important prerequisite:
a cool growing climate. today, the
best chardonnays come from a variety of cool
and mountainous areas around the state, including
carneros, santa Barbara and mendocino. the most exciting
areas to watch right now, however, are probably the
sonoma coast and the russian river Valley region of
sonoma, where cutting-edge small producers are turning
out a substantial number of the state’s most riveting
chardonnays.” richard Nalley, Food & Wine
2004 Beringer Chardonnay Reserve _____________________________ 27.99
“The 2004 Chardonnay Private Reserve is a surprisingly tightly knit Chardonnay by Beringer’s
standards, with notes of lemon oil, orange blossom, apple pie, and brioche in a full-bodied style
with some tropical fruit but good underlying acidity and fleshy texture. It seems that Sbragia has
cut back on the oak, and the wine shows more of a steely minerality than in the past. It is still a big,
relatively extroverted Chardonnay.” Wine Advocate, rated 92/100
2005 Beringer Chardonnay Sbragia _____________________________ 29.99
Rated 93/100, Wine Advocate
“Smoky, toasty oak aromas show riper, richer fruit flavors on the palate, with ripe fig, melon, apricot
and spice nuances. The flavors turn delicate and complex on the finish.” Wine Spectator, rated
92/100
“A blend of fruit from the Heintz, Ritchie, and Hyde vineyards…full-throttle, honeyed, citrussmelling
wine with full body and loads of fruit, a hint of white peaches and good minerality.” Wine
Advocate, rated 91-94/100
2004 El Molino Chardonnay Rutherford __________________________ 44.99
886 cases produced
“El Molino has succeeded in producing a wine of real substance and style. It shows fine pear, apple
and nut bread flavors, along with a figgy, raisiny quality, and has good enough acidity for balance.
The finish is very dry. This complex wine should age well over the next five years.” Wine Enthusiast,
rated 92/100
“Massive, complex, with amazing depth, an opulent, voluptuous wine of tremendous power and
authority. It’s so beautiful now, you almost hesitate to cellar it, but these Hanzel Chards are built
for the long haul. Positively volcanic in tropical fruit and toasty new oak, with a honeyed, caramel
finish. Absolutely stunning. Editor’s Choice.” Wine Enthusiast, rated 96/100
2005 Hartford Court Chardonnay Four Hearts Vyd ___________________ 34.99
Complex aromas and flavors of white peach, citrus blossom, Asian pear and candied lemon give
way to a rich and weighty mid-palate, followed by a very long, exotic spice infused finish.
