and mites. As dusk approaches thousands of
bats emerge and we may be lucky to see one of
the Bat Hawks trying to catch its evening meal.
We then move to our lodge where we stay for the
next two nights. While here, we can take a boat
trip on the Menanggol River to look for Storm's
Stork, Oriental Darter, White-fronted Falconet and
Wrinkled Hornbill. Sometimes Asian Paradise
Flycatcher and Black-naped Monarch feed over
the quiet water, and Blue-eared Kingfisher flash
past. Our main quest is for the strange Proboscis
Monkey, whose idea of beauty is a little different
from ours. We hope to see family groups, quietly
feeding in the riverside trees or making
spectacular leaps through the canopy. Each
group is presided over by a white-tailed, potbellied
male with a flattened circus-clown nose.
Also, we have the chance here to find wild Orangutans.
A previous group had wonderful views of
an adult building a sleeping platform high in one
of the riverside trees. The surrounding forest may
produce Buffy Fish-Owl, Black-and-yellow,
Banded and Green Broadbills, and various
woodpeckers, barbets, hornbills, trogons,
minivets, bulbuls and sunbirds.
Days 8 to 12
We leave our lodge this morning and have
another visit to the amazing Gomantong Caves.
Later, we drive through Lahad Datu to the Danum
Conservation Area, and transfer to the Borneo
Rainforest Lodge for the next five nights. Our time
here is spent in the heart of untouched lowland
rainforest and hill dipterocarp forest. The
rainforests of south-east Asia are incredibly
diverse and there are more trees here than in
Amazonia. We wake to the calls of Bornean
Gibbons calling, as each family group greets
Crested Serpent-Eagle
others in the forest. White-crowned Shama is an
early morning songster, which is soon joined by
bulbuls and babblers. One of the key families of
Borneo is the pittas – we shall be looking for
Garnet Pitta and the marvellous Blue-headed
Pitta. The hornbills are also well represented and
the amazing Rhinoceros Hornbill will be frequently
heard as they give their trumpeting call. There are
also Helmeted, Bushy-crested, Asian Black and
Wreathed here. The forest holds a number of
pheasants and partridges, but none as
spectacular as the Great Argus Pheasant. This is
the largest of the pheasants and we can hope to
see one of the males, which are frequently seen
on one of the trails we take. Our time here will be
spent moving slowly along the cleared trails and
exploring these superb forests. Some of the trees
are gigantic and are festooned with orchids and
bromeliads. Enormous butterflies flit through
dappled glades and overhead Oriental Honey
Buzzard and Crested Serpent Eagle soar. We
shall look for some of the other special species
here, which include Red-naped and Scarletrumped
Trogons, Crested Wood-Partridge,
Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, White-fronted Falconet,
Red-bearded Bee-eater, Short-toed Coucal,
Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker, Bornean Blue
Flycatcher, Bornean Bristlehead and Bornean and
Black-throated Wren-Babblers. The mammal list
includes Asiatic Elephants, Orang-utans, Red
Langurs, Slow Loris and even Clouded Leopard.
Days 13 & 14
The final morning may be spent either at leisure
or birding in the park. We then return to Lahad
Datu airport, where we catch our flight to Kuala
Lumpur. We then connect with our evening flight
to London, where we arrive early next morning.
