European Journal of Educational Studies 4(3), 2012 Table also indicates that the most available programmes in new universities are science programmes with the following frequencies; Chemistry 69, Biology 55, mathematics 43 and Computer Science 42. The hardly available programmes with very low frequencies are; medicine four (4), Law one (1) and Technical/Vocational Education zero (0) where student are applying mainly for medicine, banking and finance and computer engineering. The same table also indicates that there is a very low or insignificant relationship between applicants’ aspirations and the academic programmes of new universities (36 universities established between 2003-2009), as the calculated Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (by excel statistics program): r = 0,16 which is a negligible relationship between two variables (where 0.00 to 0.20 negligible, 0.20 to 0.40 low, 0.40 to 0.60 moderate, 0.60 to 0.80 substantial, 0.80 to 1.00 high to very high relationship). So the newly established universities were unable to satisfy the aspiration and demand of university applicants. The obtained information from the analysis identified that there is a need for restructuring academic programmes in such a way that applicant’s aspiration can be satisfied. CONCLUSION, DISCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS This study was motivated by the gross disparity between applicants’ aspirations for university education and rate of enrolment or admission given by universities in Nigeria. The obviously manifested trend was that, the carrying capacity of the universities was too limited to accommodate the influx of unprecedented numbers of applications. As such, more than 80 % of qualified candidates were left without admission. Findings of the study produced empirical data about the applicants’ aspirations (preferences for academic programmes) for Nigerian universities and for the international universities which aim to admit students from Nigeria so that they can restructure their academic programmes and capacity of the programs for international students from Nigeria and Africa in general. The study also compared applicants’ aspirations (preferences for academic programmes) and the available academic programmes in new universities. Findings of the study indicated that there was no significant relationship between applicants’ aspirations and the available academic programmes of new universities and justified the imperative need for the restructuring of academic programmes in Nigerian Universities. Adequate data is required for effective planning and administration of education; (Uwazurike, 1991 as cited in Hassan, 2005) therefore; the findings of this study provides useful and authentic data that can help stakeholders in education such as National Universities Commission (NUC) and JAMB in making the requisite plan for tackling the problem of admission crisis and for ensuring effective, skilful and professional control of the flow of students seeking admission. Similarly findings of the study provide information to government, especially in the area of assessment. Based on the findings of the study the recommendation made by the researcher is that more universities should be established by federal and state governments and the private sector or other non-governmental organizations and more academic programmes or additional courses should be adequately provided in all universities, so as to accommodate the teeming number of qualified applicants seeking admission. International universities can admit more students from Nigeria and Africa in general, by adjusting their capacities for international students and by providing some scholarship or discount to those students. The study provides useful insight and inspiration to researchers on the need to conduct further research in the areas of enrolment, restructuring of university for expansion, and managing admission crisis. Based on the findings of this study, it was discovered that other related areas to restructuring of academic programmes can be examined. The suggestions for further studies are; studies can be carried out on the other factors affecting academic programmes of universities, and aspirations of students and studies can be carried out on those candidates that fail to get admission into the universities. Similar studies in other countries may be useful for comparison. 444
